Buying a Helmet from Trademe? Opinions?

Postby Snaps » Mon Jul 06, 2009 11:32 pm

Hi, I'm just looking to buy a new Helmet from a seller on Trademe, they're prettty cheap ($100) so I'm wondering if they're safe, I'm thinking they could be fake? So basically just wanting anyone's opinion/ideas on them, or if you've bought one.

Here's the trademe link:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =227817487

It says they pass ECE 22.05, which is one of the accepted standards of MSNZ, still not sure, I looked up the company/Brand (HLD) on google and turned up this site:

www.kang-tex.com

It all looks pretty legit because of that, the website says they're based in Germany, which is what it also says on the TM auction. Still wanting anyone's opinon on the matter.
Cheers,
Brandon

I'd be weary of a helmet that cheap.
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

I got an HJC cos i couldnt really afford a car helmet. Spent about 300 and am happy with fitting etc. They start at about 80 bucks in shops and are still approved for motorsport (ECER xxxx). Try your local bike shop

Avoid unless you can actually physically inspect the helmet and check the standard markings.

As an experiment I bought a trademe Euro standard approved helmet for cheap.

It was a faked standard. Luckily I knew enough to ask for more information, and the seller was naive enough to supply me all the information they had, which clearly showed the documentation was all bogus.

It also reeked so badly of adhesives that I couldn't even keep it in the same room as me.

So, my advice based on my one trademe 'wow that is suspiciously cheap' helmet purchase (which is totally unscientific) would be that you shouldn't buy such a thing off trademe. Go with a known name brand, from a physical retailer where you can try on the skid lids.

eg: for some reason my open face helmet is a medium (56?). My full face helmet is XL.

Go figure.

You are quite correct though that the website does appear to be German based. There is a Chinese Kangtex.com but that seems to sell bags and stuff.

Wow, thanks for all the replies...

Note to self: Buying helmets off trademe = bad idea. My first suspicions were right.

I'll spend a bit more and make sure I get a good one. I have actually checked the local bike shop and they don't really have car helmets, but are getting some more in at the end of the week, so I'll take a copy of the standards I need it to pass and ask them about it again.

Edit: Emperor, what sort of prices can you get the arai helmets for?
Cheers,
Brandon

Those helmets Ben can get look quite reasonably priced.

This is OK for most competition and very inexpensive - if you're happy with open face.

I've got one of those helmets, from that seller, it is all good, but it is what is on the inside that counts I guess.

has the E - something euro standard label on it.
