2dr DX + Tints - WOF

Postby AE86less » Thu Jul 09, 2009 12:35 pm

I went and failed my wof yesterday for having tints on the side windows of my 2 door Corolla wagon.

The tints are about 20% (i think). It is regod as a van but has had back seats retrofitted.

I was under the impression that as the vehicle is registered as a van that these tints were legal. I have even had a cop say that they were ok. I tried to explain this to Mr Wof Man but he said that it was shaped like a car so it had to obey those rules.

I have seen this link in the faq http://forums.toyspeed.org.nz/viewtopic.php?t=45509, but was hoping that someone may be able to clarify?

it depends on how its classified, MA must have no darker than 35% tints

if its classed MB, MD1, MD2, or NA then any level of tinting is allowed on the windows behind the front pair. those classes are usually used for vans and similar, and your wagon should be an MA - hence the WOF failure.

if it is in fact one of the other classifications then it shouldn't be failing, but is classified wrong IMHO :D

so the tints on the 2 doors are 20%? I'd say illegal. Although the back windows would be ok at 20%. I think there is documentation about trade vehicles (courier cars etc) that can also have 20%, but I couldn't find it where I was looking, but that was a few years ago when I checked it out.

Front windows and windscreen (imo) should be 35%, which allows people (ie cops) to see the driver / passenger in the front when approaching the vehicle.

thats not true, the only time you are allowed a VLA below 35% on any windows in an MA vehicle is when its an OE fitment and has an approved standard.

windscreens have a minimum VLA of 70%, 35 would be insane!

If your vehicle is complied as a class MA (other than Limo or Hearse), rather than a class NA, yes, fail.

If you've got seats in the back, then you've probably stuffed any chance of having dark tint, because the number crunching on the max loading of the car will now show that there is no chance that you can pretend your wagon is a 'goods vehicle'

There's a formula that escapes my memory that involves the difference between unladen and maximum weight then a number of kg's allocated per person in the car. I tried finding it, but it is escaping me right now. Suffice to say, a KE with five people in it, aint primarily constructed for the carriage of goods

Found it:

A vehicle that is constructed for both the carriage of goods and passengers shall be considered primarily for the carriage of goods if the number of seating positions multiplied by 68kg is less than 50% of the difference between the gross vehicle mass and the unladen mass.

That's wicked Leon, cheers.

It has really light tints on the front two windows, the 20's are only on the 1/4 and boot windows.

So you just need to prove that you can put 700+kgs in your boot with no safety concerns?

My van shows up on www.carjam.co.nz as:

Vehicle type: Goods Van/Truck/Utility

Does that mean I can do what I want to the rear windows?
