Heres the point, dont think dollars, think time. With the above mods listed, how long would it take to rebuild the car (bearing it was 100% stripped, and repainted, rust removed etc). Then crash it. And try to do it all again.

What?

Was said in the context of JUST having 3rd party VS Full insurance

$300 car - 3rd Party
Don't mind throwing $$$ away if you crash car worth more than $300 - 3rd party

Car worth more than $300 - full insurance
Want to have something left if you crash - full insurance

Which, IMO is wrong. When i first got the MR2 it was going to be over 1k for full insurance PA, and around $900 excess. So if i crashed it, there is 2/3 of the value of the car already. Over 3 years it would have brought me another MR2. Its a risk for sure, 3rd party made better economic sense to me.

Think of it this way though, 20 bucks a week vs a new car if you crash it

what if an uninsured drivers hits your $6000 3rd party insured car?
what if an insured guy hits it, but disputes it?

+1

Personally, for 20 bucks a week, i dont give a shit if revhead would give up his prized goat, im not settling for third party. I have got quotes, am just trying to get the price down, as obviously, im going to shop around

Yes thats diffrent. Hence I used an example of a car worth around 3k. i worked it out on a value of car vs if i write it off type basis, at 6k full would most likley be worth it.

No, its more a case of risk assessment. As I said, with the premium charge plus the excess it would have been near on 1900 if i had written it off, so there is 2/3's the value of the car. At that price im willing to risk it.

If the car was worth 3k, it wouldnt have a rollcage + all these mods so therefore all my problems wouldnt be applicable. Anyhow, ill reply again once i see how megan goes..

Megan has replied, awesome help she was. Unfortunately it seems the best bet is Classic Car Insurance, but then im limited to 8000ks a year, and seeing as its also going to be my daily, it seems like it would be pretty tight. Seems Clic might be the best option - might just have to grin and bear the cost.

Don't ever think that money into a car = money out when it is written off. Unless you have an agreed value clause, you will still get market value for an unmodified version of that car. If you crash it, or if someone crashes into you, then your mods will still be intact anyway... and then fix the car or transfer them to the replacement shell.

I've saved at least $8000 over the years by only having 3rd party fire & theft on my vehicles.

Having 3rd party only will make you drive safer. 8)

Its my daily for 7-11 months till i finish uni. I cant afford to rego/insure/wof 2 cars, and this was a once in a lifetime opportunity when i was already looking to replace a car. So meh. Once i finish, im looking at getting into some small level 4WDing, so ill probably get a trailer built and get a decent truck

$500 daily > Race car

With car theft how it is these days I know which car i'd be using as a daily hack.

EDIT: Beaten to bring up the valid point  Makes even more sense when you look at it that way ^^.

Im still weighing up my options. So ill probably know in a day or 2.

The problem with a shitter is reliablity, and then id still need wof+rego for both cars as i cant afford a trailer and dont have a tow vehicle.

Hehe... but I think you still don't understand... by getting full insurance on a car that cheap, you are betting that you will have an expensive incident every 3 years or so.
I am betting that I can go significantly longer without any incidents.

There are two betting options, not one.
One option definitly will cost a significant amount of money, the other option may end up costing very very little.

Driving without 3rd party would be an uneducated gamble... and i'm not advocating that.
