Sprinter Marino control buttons

Postby Anton » Wed Jul 22, 2009 11:27 am

Please forgive my ignorance but there are two square bottons on the center console marked "MANU" and "PWR", then two indicator lights on the dashboard with the same marks underneath a general title of "ECT-S". As I don't have an owners's manual, can anyone tell me what these butttons are for and when best to use them? Or are they outdated and would be best not to use them? Cheers.

These buttons change the way the auto gearbox behaves.
Basically the MANU will up shift earlier (lower RPM), and down shift later.
While PWR will down shift earlier and up shift later (higher RPM).

Can you advise the best driving conditions on when to use each one and what conditions it is best to have them both off?

Both off = something in between each mode.
so when you drive in city, you could use MANU, to squeeze everything out of it use PWR, for in between both off.

With no buttons pressed, the gearbox is in "economy" or "standard" mode and will shift gears when it sees economically fit (taking into account hills and corners depending on the age of the car) or how the manufacturer intended. All gears are used in this mode (ignoring overdrive here)

With the PWR button pressed, it will hold gears longer (using more fuel) for extra power and torque, suitable for towing or if you want to pretend your 2L econobox is a rocket ship. All gears are used.

MAN or MANU is more complicated. The automatic gearbox becomes more like a manual and you have the ability to hold or start in different gears. Putting the shifter in 1 or L while in this mode will hold gearbox in 1st gear, good for steep hills etc. Putting the shifter in 2 will start the car in 2nd gear AND hold it, this is mainly used to decrease slipping while on mud, snow or gravel, also equivilent to snow mode seen in other cars. Putting the shifter in 3 or D (and so on) will start the gearbox in 1st gear, and change up to the selected gear as quickly as possible (therefore shifting gears at very low revs). I wouldn't recommend driving around town in this mode, use Economy/Standard mode.

Engine braking is not recommended with automatics, ponder would you rather replace brake pads or gearboxes.

HI Dazed & Confused. Thanks for your reply. That was very informative. I have been driving on MANU for the past two weeks thinking it was the most economical mode for city driving. Perhaps we could have more tips from you on driving automatic clutch transmissions. Cheers.
