Rust prevention - Fish oil etc.

Just about finished cutting out and replacing all the rusted metal in my supra (its been a big project) and the engines just about ready to be turned over, some nice custom work i've done that i'm sure other 1G-ers will be interested in. But that comes later.

What i'm wanting to do is minimize the rust coming back. Re-done the seams so they are 100% tight, but my boot rubber is a piece of shit. To be honest. So i'm wanting to spray some rust prevention mixture in the boot / pillars / fire wall (yes the car is just a shell atm) and i'm wanting to do it with the best compound known to man.

Anyone had experiance with what to use? I'm hoping there is a mixture that can be thinned and put in a spray gun hopper so i can crank my compressor up and get it into all the little nooks and crannies. So far everyone says 'fish oil'.

Fish-oil works alright. Some people use old engine oil mixed with saw dust or something. I also had lanolin spray recommended to me. There is also waxoyl which people recommend.

Basically u just want a layer of oil covering the metal. I emptied two cans of fish oil into my aw11 a year ago and it seems fine.

Ahhh solid theory.

Fish oil seems like the way to go, especially with this de-odorised crap. Bugger having my car smell like a hookers snatch.

POR 15 is far far far better than fish oil, just a bit trickier to spray, and as a bonus doesnt smell so rancid. Even the deodorised fish oil still has a tang that takes a few days to go away.

My dad religously sprayed all our cars with fishoilene and after many years of being outside and even on farms through mud and cow crap none of them ever rusted,

I'm not sure how POR15 works but apparently some other rust preventitives dry hard and eventually crack letting water seep through anyway after a few years.
Fishoilene sort of flexes even when its dry, Dad used to put it in the spray gun and sray it in any holes, bottoms of doors, boot wells and anywhere water can sit and start the rusting process. Leave car sitting with newspaper under it for a few days to let the excess oil drip out of the water drains etc and yes it smells for a while but is so worth it.

I have just cut out rust and welded bits back in and this is what I am going to do.

As a bonus I think it is alot cheaper than POr15 as well

por15 is more of a paint though which require you to prep the surface. Fish oil will seep into the hard to reach places.

POR15 will also sort out any rust that has started.

Just make sure you're wearing a BIO suit if you spray por15, its highly evil/dangerous stuff!

I'd probably fish oil it as POR15 will only be as good as the prep done to the metal. So if no prep (hard to reach places etc) probably not the best solution.

I'm sure both options will work though.

if the metal is fine, you don't really need to prep it
and if it needs prep such as removing rust, spraying on fish oil is going to be less effective than POR15.

i would only use fish oil on metal that is perfect already.


on a side note, for access to hard to reach places, check out bunnings for their cheap wooden brushes. they come in all sorts of shapes and angles. i used them for painting the inside of the chassis rails in my aw11 (yes they even rust INSIDE )

Por15 is known to be bad if u don't prep.

Spraying into sills etc, fishoil will do a better job.

There is far better product than fish oil.
Used extensively in Russia where in winter they put truck loads of salt, that turns the frozen mud into a salty-slushy smoothie that corrodes everything instantly.

That product is called Tectyl. It is nasty to apply - very sticky but does not smell like unwashed penis.
It is made by Valvoline and sold in NZ.
