hardly typical of the average nz road

maybe the problem is where you live, im guessing some out of the way place?
now, fess up... the road above. tell us more about it, where is it? how bust is it? where does it go? whats the signage? and whats wrong with it?

where do you suggest they put roads then?
and where would all the money come from to do that? i think you are being seriously unrealistic.
the roads i drive on are fine, yeah sometimes you find a pot hole, or a damaged section. but so what? as i said before, not once has a road tried to kill me.
sounds to me like you want billard table smooth wide roads over 100% of the country.
my suggestion to you, if you don't like where you are, move.

you numpty - how about instead of putting roads next to loose sand like hillsides and thinking 'it'll be fine' and then spending $lots fixing up the road that was damaged by the slip which could've been prevented.
I don't expect a billard table for a road

Are you road surveyor/engineer? How do you know it was not the best place available? NZ is not a flat country, I love driving in NZ because of that. I hated Australia because of flat and boring roads. The down side of hilly country is that there could be slips and washouts anywhere.

No but I'm saying it wouldn't be that hard to prevent slips or have some sort of solution in place if one does occur at least

That red fence is the solution, isn't it?
