I noticed today that there is a bit of blue smoke coming out of the exhaust, i was told that when i bought the car it had just had a compresion check and all was ok, so going by that im guesing it could be the valve stem seals. Is there anyway of checking that it is these to maybe confirm it is these. I will be doing a compresion test myself soon just dont have the gauge at the moment to do it.
Also when i toped it up with oil i may have put a bit much in, would this cause it to burn the oil until it is at the correct level?

Mine was burning oil like a motherFer, Compression test turned up nothing out of the ordinary, Turned out to be the oil control rings had basically collapsed and oil passing them at will.

Depends on how much you put in there over full.
Silvertops/blacktops are renowned for burning oil, they are pretty much like the self mixing two strokes only they save the hassle of having to fill a seperate bottle with two stroke oil by using the oil from the sump and getting it into the combustion chamber through, valve stem seals, rings and the little breathers that run into your intake
