What should I do with it?

Postby jayray » Thu Sep 03, 2009 11:48 pm

I'm trying to decide what to do with my car.
Big ends are gone and crank needs a regrind.

We got the engine out and the crank is out as of today. However it needs a new rod, and today I found out the piston won't come out the bottom of the bore. That means the head needs to come off, so in effect the engine needs a full rebuild.

I bought the car with the big ends gone, so replaced the bearing shells but the knock was still there of course.

So I'm trying to figure out what the rebuild will cost (I'll do most of the work) compared to what the car may be worth as a rolling body or completely parted out (which I don't particularly want to do).

I should be able to get a rod fairly cheaply, or a short block, but when there's:
new rings $?
full set of crank shells $230
front and rear crank seals $110
Head gasket $?
Cambelt kit w/ water pump $250
Oil pump?
Crank grind $?
Cam seals $?

Plus anything and everything else which needs replacing, and the myriad of little seals and gaskets, then the whole thing adds up fairly quickly.

Its an 87 MR2 hardtop SC which looks to be in excellent condition rust-wise, and the paint is pretty good.

So what do you think it could be worth as a rolling body, or as a very straight car with a rebuilt motor?
And if I did go ahead would it be worth converting to manual and get rid of the slushbox?

The shells and crank seals were prices Mark quoted with the TS discount and the cambelt kit is the one on TM.
I'm not sure on exact prices it was just to get an indication really and add it up.

A replacement long block definitely seems the way to go, I'll ring round the wreckers tomorrow and see if they have any.

What would it likely cost to have a complete engine shipped from auckland?
There is a complete one on TM which would probably be the least amount of work unless I can find one closer to christchurch.

Supercharger rota!
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Will the gze ecu be alright controlling boost with NA compression?
I believe flying wedge has done this, but can the stock ecu handle it?

I'm pretty much decided to stick a straight replacement engine, just need to find one first.

flying wedge has my old car
original conversion done by a guy monsterbishi (hasn't posted in a while) i tidied it up a bit and modded some other areas.

the engine was an ae92 bigport n/a
all the aw11 s/c gear including s/c were swapped over.
you will need to mount the knock sensor, either drill a hole in the block, or i rigged up a crude but seemingly effective bracket.
I also cannot recommend a water to air intercooler strongly enough.
engine went fine, mine was previously an n/a car so still ran the c52 box, that combined with the higher comp and cooler made it much faster than a stock manual s/c aw11.

finding a replacement early 4agze will be hard.... and you could prob buy an entire ae92 donor car for the same price....

yeah gzes do seem to command some slightly silly prices, and all you really need is the block itself by the sounds of it
