Wiring in a Gizzmo shift light

Postby 85AW20v » Tue Aug 25, 2009 10:19 pm

Have picked up a shift light for the AW. The instructions say to use the +tive, -tive and rev outputs from the ECU. Is it OK to use the +tive, -tive and rev feeds from the back of the dash cluster as it would be a PITA to run wiring to the back of the car to pick those feeds up.

Be helpfull if you can tell us if its the older style one or a brnad new one as they are quite different in there wiring, the older ones don't work with toyota stuff very well unless you play round with it lot and i'm pretty sure that the new ones don't work if you plan on using the launch interface with it although the shift light works ok

It is an older one I think - dual stage shift light is all it says on the box. It was Listing #: 232022275 on TM if you want to have a look. It has 2 buttons on it, one to set preshift point and on for shift point and three wires to connect. I'm not using it wth launch control.

its the new style.
I dont think it will work on your factory tacho as it has a low level output unless you find the resistor in your dash an remove it

You can either use the rpm feed or one of the injector feeds but both by the computer - it won't hurt your injector cycle, resistance or anything like that, i know this from experience.
There's a guy in palmy, can't remember his name on here that's wired one up in his blacktop seems to work ok but the new launch interface don't work with toyota's, he had to get a special one built for him by gizmo cos they sold him the whole lot as working on toyota's.
Actually my old launch/shiftlight unit which was one of the older gizmo units wouldn't work on toyota's either, ended up playing around with it to get it to work in launch mode properly after finding that the cycles from the rpm feed were fuzzing the mis cycles because there were to many rpm's/sec for it and it was cutting to many cycles and putting the computer into limp mode. Hooked the rpm signal wire into the injector and worked mint, no more limp, constant rpm hold on launch etc etc

OK - shift light is wired in and both preshift and shift LED's light up when I turn the key on which the installation guide says shows power and earth are OK. Problem is, I don't seem to be able to set the shift points. So, a few questions:

1. Is there any way of testing the shiftlight itself?
2. Does the pickup for the input need to come from the ECU as in this case, it's in the boot. NE(RPM) feed must come to the front as the factory tacho works.
3. Can I use any of these outputs out of the ECU - NE, IGT, IGF, any of the 4 injector feeds.

Forgot to say its it's a silvertop ECU rather than the bluetop, if that makes any difference.
