Crank work - smoothing casting imperfections

Postby Paulio » Fri Sep 11, 2009 1:11 pm

Heyaz

Im sending another crank (this one) to the balancers because the first one had stuffed thrust bearing journals.

This crank is for my 20v turbo engine that im slowly building on the side, it will be a fresh build.

So ive had this one cleaned, measured & checked but I was wondering if its worth really cleaning it up and grinding off all the casting marks & imperfections. You can see in the photo some fat lips:

I wouldnt normally bother but I have the chance to because its going to be re-balanced anyway.

Would I be wasting my time? Or would it be worth it for the experience?

anything to stop the oil 'sticking' or clinging onto parts of the crank it doesn't need to is a good thing
it's a good/worthwhile mod IMO - dry sumping is the other extreme
