Lazy GTZ... (NOW FOR SALE)

Postby V-JAY » Fri Sep 11, 2009 2:03 pm

Hey guy's wondering if I can pick anyone's brains here?!

Recently picked up a '91' AE101 GTZ Levin. I've done heaps and heaps of searching since I joined and found some really helpful info so cheers.

In short...

1.) She idle's like a pig when started from dead cold with rich smelling emissions from the exhaust until warm!

2.) Supercharger doesn't really seem to superly-charge anything? Have topped up with genuine Toyota oil.

3.) Open road driving causes temp to drop very low, however fans still kick in once she gets up to temp when stationery.

Any help would be great!

P.S. If anyone needs bearings, I'm your man.

Cheers.

temp issue is a commin thing on them, mine done it but not that bad, open road driving it would below 1/4 then when still it would be half way

just one of those things

what size s/c pulley do you have? make sure the belt is tight, they are prone to slipping

idle, i remember mine had something to do with the cold start injector, but this is going back yrs ago and i cant remember weather or not this is true

Cheers dude, yeah from what I've read here already the GZE is notorious for idle/temp issues.

S/C pulley is bog standard, the whole car has literally never been played with which is kind of good I suppose.

Any way I can tell if the cold start injector and or sensor is rooted?

Temperature thing is the stuck thermostat (located in the housing on the gearbox) 15min job (~$30 genuine?).
When cold does it sound like miss? Have you checked leads/plugs?

Choice, thanks mate. I'll rip the thermostat out and replace that first. Definitely sounds like it has a slight miss when started from cold, idles stupidly low untill you give it some gas. Haven't been down the plug and lead road yet coz it seems like it's running far too rich?!

They have cold start injector, that is operated by a thermo-swtich (brown plug located on coolant elbow, gearbox side, although I could be mistaken on location). Sometimes that thermo-switch does not work properly that could cause the issue you describe.

the temp issue will definately be thermostat. Just changed the one on my silvertop for that exact issue.

Very easy, and yes it cost about $30 for genuine parts. Just make sure you get a new rubber o-ring too. Youll loose about 1-2L of coolant unless youre ninja quick.

Really appreciate the feedback guys....

Bit of an update.... replaced the thermostat on Friday night, didn't alter the idle speed at all, however operating temperature is now steady even with open road driving so that's one thing ticked off the list!

Now, we adjusted some strange looking white coloured plastic box right on top of the inlet manifold (excuse my ignorance), we loosened the two screws either side and virtually turned it anti-clockwise as far as it could go before hitting the casting and re-tightened the screws, idle is 10 times better.. dropped from 1500Rpm to around 950Rpm.

Revhead: Would this have been the ISC? Didn't look like it would come off easily without damaging the metal retainers holding it at the bottom?!

Sergei: Have read a lot of info on here about the cold start injector, where exactly is it and what do I try and replace? Injector or thermo switch?

P.S. Sorry if anyone has fallen asleep!

yes thats it.
you have to pry the retainers off apart to remove it. i wouldn't bother with that if you have made it better by adjusting it

Yeah didn't look like it would come off easily, knowing my luck I'd butcher it for sure! :x

So has anyone replaced the thermo switch on these? Is it ok to replace with a second hand unit?

http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/p_J_1992_TOYOTA_LVN_AE101-ACMXR_8404.html
Part number: 89462-20030 is the cold start injector switch.

You can replace it with second hand, provided if it works, there is a way to check it (no need to replace things blindly).

Measure voltage at the cold start injector, it should only fire when car is cold (overnight cold) and cranking.
I will let you know exact processes when I get home and look at the manual (3SGTE in this case, but same principle).

More info there, scroll down to page 20.

You also could check by simply disconnecting it, and see if it still smokes on start up.

firstly: warm the car up.

turn car off and take battery lead off for like a minute.

put lead back on and jump in and go for a 5min hoon just free rev the car and get up to at least 100km if you can.

come back and turn the car off... open the diag plug behind the battery and short E1 and T1

turn the key onto ON but dont start.

if you get anything other than continuous steady blinking let us know.
