Thats right, but a cert of any sort isnt a safe guard against a sticker or fine simply because it is too easy to modify the exhaust or engine. "I think youve changed the exhaust". It does help though but there is nothing guaranteed.


bs, if you get the proper cert, it has all the information on the peice of paper that you MUST have in the car at all times, it has measurements, amount of mufflers, stuff about exhaust manifold, that i have an external wastegate, and that i must have the silencer fitted to be legal, all on it. i've laminated mine to keep it nice.

you show them that, and you show them the sticker on the exhaust, i put mine on the muffler tip in clear view if any cop wants to have a look. they can check that the sticker matches the one on the piece of paper and they CANNOT DO ANYTHING. they can get a tape measure out if they like but most won't.

Mine is a bolt in silencer.

it's 150-220 and takes about 40-45min.

Neil Fraser did mine, just took it there since he did my car cert. I went to get the green sticker removed at VTNZ Kumue (put silencer back in) and he didn't think it was loud, but got me to get the thing certed just because it was stickered for it. i was .2db under the limit.

There is so much crap in this thread of people that think they know what is right and wrong.

The cop had every right to sticker it whether anyone likes it or not. Get the cert and be done with it,

+1 and the exact same deal with me, except i certed it BEFORE i got green stickered, and mine was .8 under the limit (Although i believe there is a +2dB allowance for vehicles with an auth card for motorsport? Someone confirm this)

Lots of... "if I was your", "Tell the cop to sod off" and "screw them" attitudes. Unfortunately having a car that is little different is not going to be an easy road to drive. Get used to it, prepare yourself and know your rights. After that, you just have to face the facts that sometimes cops are mean and you are being stereotyped and it will NOT change no matter how much you cry and complain.

Anyways. For those of you who have never seen one here is a copy of the cert paper for my Mirages exhaust. It cost me $150.00 to get done.
The drawing isn't very technical but it give the idea of what is there at the time of inspection.

I tested my car today (with works db thingy) and it came in at 91db and it's bloody loud so to be over that would be really really loud! Now to get a cert for it.....

They have to be calibrated every so often, at least once a year, and they do a some check on them before every use. We have one of the proper ones that we can get access to at work, it's about $17,000 worth of kit. Airforce is a big company though and take noise hazards pretty seriously so get top quality stuff.

91 might seem loud, but remember that the car is quieter when your actually driving along at those revs, if your cruising that is.

What RPM you measure it at? It varies for engine based on cylinders, cyl config, dohc/sohc, VVT/Vtec, turbo/na etc.

My 1.5 sohc vtec was tested at 4.2k RPM iirc.

2.8 inline 6 sohc n/a and we tested it between 2500 and 3000rpm although the testing environment wasn't in my favor (indoors etc).
