ae101 FXGT rubbing noise

Postby KwS » Sat Sep 19, 2009 10:25 pm

Okay, its finally to the point where im getting mildly concerned.

About a week ago, my ae101 started making a faint metal on metal rubbing noise when taking left hand turns. Checked to see if tire was rubbing on anything, because the car is lowered, and i cant see anywhere its been rubbing. Gap around tire is fine, isnt touching liner, atleast with car stopped.

The past day or so the noise has been louder, and now sometimes when go go straight after taking a left the noise remains for a little bit.

Its a metal on metal rubbing. Almost like a stone between the dust shield and brake rotor, but that would do it all the time, not just the conditions it been.

Car drives fine, even with the noise. Doesnt pull left or anything. Brakes shudder a little under hard braking, but that likely just a warped rotor?

id start by checking your brakes in more detail...especially brake pad thickness

pads all have a lot of meat on them. Were replaced not long before i got the car.

The sound doesnt change if i apply or release brakes, or if i shove the clutch in. Its at road speed, not engine speed also.

Backing plate is probably bent and is touching the rotor, if you have alloys take a largish screw driver and push on edges of backing plate see if that fixes it.

wouldnt it do it all the time if it were bent?

ill whip the wheel off this weekend and see. if it is the bearing, how hard are they to replace, and any idea on a cost?

The thing is there is slight movement in bearing (even if new) so it can be intermittent.
Bearing will be around $60-80, you might need new hub sub-assemby (rotating part that holds the wheel), that will cost about $160 from memory. Also you will be paying at least 1 hour of labour.

pity i didnt take you up on your bet.... i'd be rich ;)

Wasnt a wheel bearing, it was nothing more than a tiny wee stone, wedged between the caliper and dust shield. It had been sharpened to a fine point and wearing a small groove in the rotor.

no way the stone wouldve made its way back out without help of a screwdriver and leverage.

Thanks for the advice guys, im just thankful it wasnt a bearing.
