He never actually lost it in the car, the technicans advised him to turn it off and reset it as they thought there might be a potential issue so he only carried it not running for 1 lap during which time Nico begin to really close in.

So Nico closed in while Hamilton was trying to race and take instructions through the radio, while punching in a while lot of buttons to reset the KERS in his car.
