Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

The hybrid also features regenerative braking that uses kinetic energy to recharge the on-board lithium-ion battery that provides the electric power.

How does this work? bit of a new one to me..

Its the same way the Prius works.

Basically, its a 2 way electric motor. Pump some power through it, it creates a rotating force. Do it the other way by putting a rotating force into it, it pumps out electricity.

Ditch the doors and it is cool with me.
Remember it is concept, as with concepts it will either be "normalized" or ditched entirely.
I wish they would ditch the gearbox driven directly by petrol motor entirely (and ditch petrol motor at same time).
Much better to have a small diesel motor (~25-100kW) driving generator which in turn charges small battery pack and drives the electric motors (say 4x50kW or 2x100kw with diffs). This way complexity of the system is reduced (remember the car already comes with electric motor, battery pack and generator, but we are ditching mechanical gearbox).
Electric motors don't need conventional multi-step gearbox, at most they will need a reductor (one gear set), or a diff. which also is a reductor (if one motor is used per axle). No clutch is needed either, electric motors don't stall in common sense, they operate from 0 rpm, where the torque is very flat and linear, while power curve is linearly climbing up. Also 100kW electric motor can weigh a fraction of a 100kW internal combustion motor.
If you account mechanical losses in mechanical gearbox, you will find also electrical transmission is much more efficient and robust.
All big rigs (quarry vehicles and trains) don't have mechanical transmission. They have electrical generator and in-hub motors (in case of quarry vehicles) that double up as brakes.

what quarry vehicles have electric motors in the hubs?
I know Volvo have just done a hybrid loader. However in not sure what configuration that is, everything I'm used to (which isnt much yet!) is all hydraulics, ie hydraulic motors in the hubs

Yeah just been looking into the Volvo loader system, it's not like what they do in cars.
It's used to help with fuel efficency by allowing the engine to start instantly, so when idling for a period the engine switches off. then if you make a control input that controls that requires the engine its spun up faster by the electric motor. the electric motor also helps with low rev operation. the wheels etc are still powered by hydraulics.
It's all done through the starter. starter motor is now also a generator, and motor! rather than just a simple motor used for starting
