looking at going 3" exhaust on the heap.
Is flexi joint recommended? or not really needed?

best to too take up some flex in the exhaust system , otherwise you may tend to crack the exhaust abit 8)

Its not so critical, as you dont get the forward-backward rock like you do in FWD, the side to side rock in north south motors gets taken mostly by the rubber hangers.

my dump pipe (in a rwd) has just cracked.

couple of people have now recommended either bracing it with a bracket to the engine and/or fitting a flexi to prevent it happening again.

Flexi is your friend! Get one and the exhaust wont crack over time

I've fixed mine to the engine via a bracket to the bellhousing and have a flexi joint just after.
Its easier to include it at first, rather than have it crack then trying to locate where the exhuast is leaking and fixing etc.

For the price of a flexi, its well worth it.

I braced my downpipe to the bellhousing, cause the weight of the turbo and exhaust was pulling the studs out of the head! After doing that, I had no problems. A flexi would be good, but with a 2.5" exhaust, they're kinda expensive.... :(

I run a 3.5" so can't get a flexi - Bolting the exhaust to the gearbox mount and bellhosing seems to have worked really well though :)

you can get flex joints larger than 3", think truck exhausts.

I'd think a flex joint is a good idea just to be safe, but as mentioned by others - make sure your downpipe is braced to the engine too. I do actually wonder how effective those flex joints are for a RWD - in a FWD you're bending the tube, which is how the joints are designed to deform; in a RWD you're twisting it, and I'm not sure how much (if at all) those joints can twist.

Yeah you can get 4" ones... 3.5" is just an odd size

I have had heaps of issues with the manifold and nuts and studs coming loose from where the turbo mounts (RWD). I have put it down to no flexi as the vibration from the engine is trying to shack the whole exhaust system, the weak point in the link is those nuts and studs. Thats my theory anyway??
