Auto dying when put in gear

Postby .:O4AGTZ:. » Fri Oct 09, 2009 9:51 pm

Its actually an automatic mazda lantis but i figured someone might have some idea. Was driving it today and it died. Turned out that you can start the car fine, but as soon as you put it into a moving gear such as Drive or Reverse the car dies. It was quite a bit jerky when changing gears for a little while as well. Any ideas what the problem could be?

Cheers guys

check that there is no airleaks , like if the plastic piping from the intake to the airbox , that is quite common with those mazdas 8) causes the symptoms you talk of .

I have also heard that the converter could be locked is that correct? presumably as some solenoid has burnt out. why would it do this? gearbox in need of a decent flush and service i would presume?

sounds like its not coming out of lock up which could be a torque converter, solenoid or ecu problem
suspension travel is an optional extra

i would almost put money on it being this. i have replaced dozens upon dozens of those plastic intake hoses. due to the nature of the rubber it sort of seals when its sitting in place, but when u put the car in gear the motor rocks forward and flex's the hose opening up the hole and letting un-metred air in causing it to stall. just open the bonnet and give it a squeez, if you can see it cracking or perished then that will be your issue.
