polishers/buffers etc

Anyone know where to get a good priced Polisher/buffer (variable speed angle grinder)?

I've been to Mitre10 and they have a De Walt one for almost $500. Also seen Hitachi and Makita ones on Tardme for $450ish.

Anyone know of something a bit cheaper and no I don't mean the cheap Chinese cr*p that's on tardme either ($90).

Just out of interest, what do people prefer to use, electric or air? And what compounds, Mothers, Meguiars, 3M, other?
I've found where I can buy wool bonnets and waffle foam pads. Just need a good polisher now.

I got a 7" 1200w sander/polisher form supercheap. Was $100 and came with a crappy wool bonnet which I replaced with a decent one and got an aluminuim backing pad and foam polishing pad from work, it even came with a spare set of brushes. Have done my ute and SW20 and a boat with it so far using crappy Kitten extra cut polish. Im more than happy with the results considering the cheap polish used.

I like the look of the Makita ones. Might have to just bite the bullet and buy one.

i have a rupee's one have had it for 5+ years and brought it secondhand in the first place, have had no problems at all and have easy done 50 cars in that time

also if you're a bit of a novice polishing/buffing cars I would highly recommend getting an orbital buffer instead of a typical rotary/angle grinder type buffer, in the wrong hands you can easily do damage to the paintwork with a rotary buffer.

I have a cheap variable speed orbital buffer from supercheap (they don't sell this type any longer) and with the right compound it does an awesome job. Only gripe about it is the pads you get for them often come off if not done up correctly.

You'll have to bust out the old polishing cloth and manually buff up bits you can't reach easily like corners of the guards, under the door mirrors, close to the glass etc.

Just been out to Supercheap in Albany and got the polisher and a foam compound pad. Just need to get a nice soft finishing foam pad and I'll be set.

Got home and have now found out the Meguiars DA polisher is on special for $360, damn it.
Oh well, what I've got should do.

It's times like these when I really wish I was back in the UK, or at least it was closer to us... you look at the detailing world forum and yeah, the makita polisher is the bees knees, but for beginners (and even the pros) use a cheap random orbital made by Silverline that goes for about $70 Group buy anyone? lol

I've been loking at those, especially since I haven't the heart (or the cash) to buy a Makita one. I haven't seen anything else brand-wise between the Ryobi or Makita/ Metabo polishers either. Is the Ryobi any good?

I use a superworks multi action orbital from super cheap, $50 jobbie, and I polish my car alot. As for compounds I use Meguiars Professional or Pinnicle XMT. Depending on the state of the paint start with medium then fine and finish with swirl remover before waxing.

Ive been detaling cars for years and have yet to use a high speed, to easy to damage paint if you are not careful, not to mention you only need them for really really bad paint.

oh and microfiber pads do the trick, I had mine custom made, no cotton foam or wool on my car or my friends cars.
