what size discs can you run with 17" wheels

Postby callum » Wed Oct 21, 2009 7:36 pm

hey whats the biggest disc size that would normally fit within a 17" wheel. im deciding what size to get and i only have 16" wheels at the moment so cant measure anything up.

cheers

depends on the rim design as some have more clearance than others and also caliper design too.

^^^ indeed it does. I shoehorned some 310mm rotors under a 15'' rim. Not much clearance though..

My 17's only fit over my brakes because the caliper I'm using pokes out quite far. The overall diameter of the brakes is not an issue even though I'm using 324mm disks with willwood calipers.

depends on the caliper and where the disc sits in relation to thehub/wheel mating face, the futher back towards the strut the larger you can go.

with a GT4 4 pot caliper, I am currently looking at running a 335mm disc (can fit 340mm) on my SE104

320 should be easy enough in a 17, but as said before it depends on the design of the wheel (where the depressions are in the band), the caliper size and the hub face/spoke distance.

You might even fit a 320 under you 16's? I have 300's under 15's with Wilwood superlite-II calipers (big) - they fit with a small amount of clearance between caliper and rim. A 16" wheel should be around 25mm bigger inside so going to a disc that is 320mm should work.

the further back from the spokes you can get it the better

yeah the plan is to buy wheels after i fit the brakes as i dont think i will be able to get my calipers within the wheels i have now. i need to find a place that can measure up my dummy hub with the new brakes and the car to make sure nothing rubs before i can buy the wheels.

I would recommend buying wheel before brakes

why?

it would be far easier to find a wheel after you have the brakes on the car as you would then know the offset and xfactor required for the car.

if you can setup the strut with the brakes on it you could just bring that down to me and we could try different fitments onto if for you

No,
Offset will have nothing to do with the disc, will depend on strut and guard clearance,

And different rims have the dips etc in different places, so you may find that the only rims you can get to fit are too heavy, ugly or expensive,
where if you had mounted the caliper and disc in or out a bit it would clear more options.

Only really applies if it is going to be close between the caliper and the rim,
but if it's not close then what's the point of this whole thread.???

exactaly my point offset is determined by the clearance if the strut, the size of the gurads and the width of the rim. if you have the brakes on there you will be able to get a much better idea of how it will fit.

xfactor is only determinable with the brakes in place so how else would you do it?
