Thanks guys

I've ended up with the Dunlop Sport Maxx things, because they seem well enough liked and they were available from the place I needed to get them.

Cheers all.

My opinions on tyres...

Several years ago Toyspeed had a trackday at Manfield as part of a megameet I think.

In the lunch break I ran an emergency braking coaching session.

Among the cars were 2 identical AE92 fxgts (one was B1NZ I think)
Anyway - braking from 60kph one fxgt would stop quickly with no fuss.
The other would take 3 or 4 metres longer to stop with squealing noises and some smoke.

The car that took longest to stop had firestone enduros
The other car (with identical size tyres) had higher quality tyre.

As a result I decided to always put much better than average tyres on all of my cars.
Currently running Adrenalins on my 4afe corolla wagon, Dunlop Direzza DZ101 on my falcon wagon, the old camry also had direzzas.

I would much rather spend extra money on good tyres - no use lying in hospital wondering if better tyres would have avoided an accident.

my 10 cents worth (swedish rounding)

I used to think that the orange and green tictacs gave you special powers. The orange ones would make you stronger and the green ones would make you faster. So i used to eat some green ones and run around my lounge as fast as i could, then eat the orange ones and try to pick up the sofa. I wish it were true!

One important rule:
In emergency - tyres are sometimes the only thing that can save you.
Save $200 - $300 dollars a year, or lose vehicle, or worse, injury or death?

I tend to keep cars for very long time (still got Trueno that I bought in 2000). This makes economical to put high end tyres ($800-$1000 a set) that lasts about 2 years (in case with Trueno a lot longer now as I don't drive it very often).
Generally people who buy cars for 6 months will never put anything good as they don't want to lose money, some even will never service them, this is the main market for unsafe tyres (and ignorant people who are just cheap, or real poor students).
I have been in cars with unsafe tyres (most of them Chinese, some of them Kellys, and a few snow tyres that came on car from Japan), and in dry anything above normal load will cause them to loose grip, while in wet it is extremely unsafe. Some of the shitty tyres don't even last long (Chinese brands for example).
