TRDman or others knowledgable in powerhouse 2e's

Postby xsspeed » Tue Nov 03, 2009 6:16 pm

Just saw this motor for sale on trademe,

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=251385981

Any knowledge on this?

It tickles my fancy a bit, any key questions I should be asking the seller?

I think TRDman you have mentioned in the past that the 2e cranks are quite weak?

I had a 2E Corolla before, it was a beast!

Just want to ask, I know they're 12 valves, so which valve is the intake and which ones are the exhaust?
No "stance", no "hellaflush", none of that bullshit. Nothing but no grip on full boost.

Two intake valves per cylinder, one exhaust.

Nice looking bit of kit. And well worth the money being asked. At the time you could buy a TRD spec 2E 'off the shelf' - price circa 60K.

I'd be a little wary of the 160hp claim. Our last 2E had much of the same gear and ran at nearly 15 to 1 compression. It certainly lit up and although we never dynoed it - 160hp? don't think so.

A std 2e crank has hollow journals. When TNZ brought the TRD prepared EP71 rally car here for Jennings to use they had issues with the cranks breaking under load.
After a message was sent to Japan in search of remedy, a wooden crate turned up with a few dozen (100?) solid steel machined cranks inside.
I ended up with the bulk of these but they have long since been sold/distributed.
These were never available commercially and your chances of finding one now are remote. And they didn't take a grind so an old used one is of no use.

Turbo 2e engines have a more solid crank. Still hollow journals but not quite as much. Could be worth looking out for one of these but they'll be rare also.

In fact, another thing to consider is that all of the TRD gear for this engine has been obsolete for well over 10 years.

cheers for the responses, TRDman your as knowledgable as ever.

Would you wager that this is one of these off the shelf TRD engines, or a standard 2e built up with TRD parts?

I guess the next question is, whats the feasibility of running such an engine in a road going car?

Is it lukely the cam profile is going to make for a nightmare at idle in traffic?

And as for compression although not mentioned here, if its up at 15 or so, I would assume this is beyond the abilities of pump gas?

Built up 2E! Awesome.

Look at the size of those intake valves compared to exhaust valve, crazy!

Thanks for posting the link

(Sorry I cant help at all though, haha)

The little valve is not the exhaust valve. The exhaust valve is the 2nd largest you see there.

It could be an engine that has come out of a TRD Starlet class car but is probably more likely one that has been built up for other use.

The cam will be 'aggressive' but the engine will probably still be quite tractable in traffic. Power band though will likely be above 5,000 rpm.

Our motors were injected and controlled by a TRD ECU. This is set up for carbs. What difference that'll make I'm not sure. There were a few guys, particularly in the SI, who ran these with good success on carbs in rally EP71's.

It'll unlikely be 15 to 1 compression, more like 12 or 13 to 1.

I still have the TRD brochure for this engine and EP71 bits. If anyone buys this and would like a copy I'm happy to oblige.

And the only problem they (scott and one of his brothers) found was not to do with cranks but pistons

whats the problem there? is that related to this or to the 2e-t motors?

ah yep thought so, have heard this is an issue without knowing exactly what happens? Is it in relation to running higher boost?

I'm not too sure exactly what the issue was with the 2e-t pistons, all i know is scott was often asking me if they were still available.

Edit: actually iirc he had at least one go due to detonation and break between rings

The pistons are the weakest link in the 2e-t's, likewise (but to a lesser extent) on the 4e-fte.

I wouldn't expect any issues from a 2e-t crank under any sort of NA load... haven't ever heard of one having issues in turbo'd applications.

as stated in for sale section now/this is owner speaking/ it is turbo crank not forged which is a shame, compression ratio is around 13;1 and the motor is a ex rally motor from japan i was told class c1 spec. 160hp is all i was told from the spec list i was sent with motor along with the other close kept spec secrets. it is likely to be a long block brought after production as it is a 33333 numbered bottom end with facelife features, could be a off the shelf trd motor that parts have got scares for and have been replaced with lesser quality items such as turbo crank instead of steel ect.has trd rocker cover also but that im keeping in the family
