Crossthreaded Oil Relief

Postby ee904age » Sat Nov 07, 2009 7:05 pm

Have just fitted the 3SGTE to my SW. I never put the exhaust elbow on before lifting the motor up and once in the car, the only way I could see to get it on was to remove the oil cooler. It all went well until re-installing the cooler. When I went to put the relief valve back in it seems its been cross threaded before and wont go back in. It starts going in about one thread then loosens off again, theres nothing wrong with the thread on the actaul valve so it must be in the block.

Will it be safe to block the hole with a bit of rag or something and re-tap it, then blow out or is it engine out again?

P.S I think the thread is 3/4 UNF, can anyone confirm?

if yoy know the thread size and pitch, get appropriate thread tap/restorer and wind it in with plenty of grease to catch the swarf that may come out.

can also put some silicone sealant in the bottom of the hole and let it set. drill retap etc then pull the silicone out,

The 3S-GTE oil cooler does not screw straight into the block, it screws into a bracket that is bolted to the block.

Easiest, and safest thing to do is to remove the bracket and either repair the thread or replace the bracket. That way you have zero chance of crap entering your oil system, provided you clean everything before re-assembly. ;)
