3S engine question

Postby loudstealthGT-Four » Sat Nov 14, 2009 11:25 am

So I cooked my 3sgte and am thinking about maybe having it rebuilt. What I was wondering is I have a 1990 celica gtr with a good condition 3SGE in it, so how would that motor stand if it was rebuilt into a 3sget/3sgte. Or if I was going to rebuild my 3sgte could I use bit off the 3sge like the head. What is the difference between a 3sge and 3sgte in terms of strength

Cheers Tyler

IIRC, the GE and the GTE share the same crank and rods, the GE uses high comp pistons so the pistons are different. I think the head is different aswell.

the gt 4 blocks are a bit different to the na 3sge as the gt blocks are machined to take the gaer box closer to the block than the NA block and are made out of stronger material as well

GTE block has the all important oil feed tap, and piston squirters.

You can tap your own oil feed with the GE block but what about the piston squirters? People say they're important others say they're not, well take your pick :S

To me, its like the old condom saying. Better to have one and not need it...
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

My old man was running a GT4 that had been rebuilt with NA pistons. It boogied like no tomorrow. He drove it like that for about 20,000km until it was writern off by some old lady who tripped out from diabetes.

When we pulled the block down to rebuild it for his 165 we discovered the Beams pistons in it, and noticed the ring landings were broken. Crazy thing is you couldnt even tell and it would happily run 14psi day in day out.

GE's are cheap enough so no harm in blowing one or 2 up while u get ur motor rebuilt.

Is it beacuse the pistons are higher comp that's why it ran really well?

I'm not sure if the original poster wants reliablity or cheap, you can't have both really. I say do it once and do it right, put proper GTE block and pistons in.

Yea increasing the compression ratio gives you a increase in HP. So running a high compression motor with boost = lots of HP but also lots of heat which kills stuff.

I cant remember the thermodynamic formula to explain this but you get the idea.

Im a fan of quick fun. If you cant afford to stick a $6000 bluiprinted motor in your car, why not slap your exsisting gear on a $300 3SGE and have a blast for the next 8 months. Youd be suprised how many NA 4ages running turbos run for a very long time (15,000 - 25,000km)

gen 3 n/a blocks have oil squirters. im running a gen3 na block. you have to grinde the block back for the center diff and t the turbo oil feed fron the oil presser sensor

I'm definatly after reliability, but..... Cheap sounds tempting atm if it would keep me going till I could afford said reliability and who could say no to more hp :D. Just out of interest what would be involved in turboing my 3sge the cheap fun way? I mite actually consider it if it'll last me said 20000ks. My 3sge is from a 1990 celica gtr with less than 100000ks so it's got abit of life to go
