excessive resistance causing starter issues or?

Postby Paulio » Mon Nov 16, 2009 9:28 pm

hey yall

im having fun diagnosing a starter problem in my bros hiace. the only history is a flat battery a couple of times.
it all started by the engine dyeing randomly and not starting. at the moment what is happening with a turn key is a slow starter motor like a dead battery, lights dim and I only get 1 or 2 revolutions. (the starter has been fine until this problem)
if I hold the key in start, it will heat up the earthing cable to a point where it melts the insulation. i have connected another earth from the battery to the block and same thing.

so im trying to figure out if the cable is heating up from too much resistance
or
the starter is poked and is pulling too many amps. (can a starter do this?)

either way would make sense. (but are they both as likely as each other?)

any ideas?

One of the coils might be shorted halving the power output and increasing the current.
Trying another starter motor would be the easiest option.

Had a Hiace towed into work with similar symptoms once,

turned out it had run out of oil and was seized solid.

Not a common problem and I'd doubt that will be your fault, lol.

Most probably an issue in the starter motor itself as long as there is nothing shorting out the link from the solenoid output to the motor housing.

Cheers matt, after looking in to it last night I think that may be the case with this one.
