Ok so I have some parts being shipped from Japan to NZ and should be arriving pretty soon. So what should happen is; they come into the country clear customs and then get shipped/posted to me right?

Basically yes, unless you get stung for duty upon entry then you will be required to pay the duty prior to receiving your goods.

they will contact you, but don't expect them to be quick.

Last time I had to pay import fees (about 2 months ago) I received a letter labeled URGENT and it had all the info inside.

If the value is under $400 then they should clear customs without any GST being charged. Over that it seems you have about 25-50% chance of escaping without being charged GST.

This applies to items coming in via EMS or normal post. Items shipped by couriers like DHL, FedEx etc seem to attract GST at a lower threshold, along with an "Administration" charge :evil:

Its actually done off if there is $50 or more in duty/tax to be paid. For most items, this works out to be the $400 figure (0.125 * $400 = $50 ) as the majority of items are taxed at 12.5%. Some items like clothing, shoes, etc attract a tax of like 23.75% so for these items the 'no tax' threshold is lower.

I get that you have to pay GST, but whats "duty" and how is it calculated or is it the same as GST?

(and lol at some of the stuff on that customs charges list - damn have to pay extra for my Depth Sounder)

Duty is different and seperate to GST and varies between items and also total value for some items.

Customs website shows the duty % for all sorts of common groups of items.

Often (ive found) on customs declaration forms the sellers will tick (GIFT) or list the items at a lower value, or mark as Sample (no value).

Customs duty is a charge applied to raise the cost of imported goods to protect local industry.
In days of old everything imported attracted duty and you could pay in excess of 100% on many items.
Today, as champions of the free market, we have dropped customs duty from most imported goods ... but not all.
It can be a trap for the unwary.

For the most part automotive parts are exempt from customs duty but there are a few that are not.

Also, it may be common for privately imported consignments to pass through the system without duty or GST being charged however on occasion they'll come by a courier company which will clear the goods through customs on your behalf and charge you the duty.

You should check whether an item is subject to customs duty before you order.

Oh ok, so that list on the website is for DUTY then you add GST on top of that??
OR is that the TOTAL of GST and Duty?

i.e. It has a heading saying "Duty/GST rate (%)" and car parts are 12.5%

So if I imported something worth $10,000 NZD (inc shipping) I would pay:

Duty on $10,000 = $1,250

Plus GST on $11,250 = $1,406.25

TOTAL $2,656.25

well so far ive imported 2 items

1st: was sea shipped item costed $2,000 went through customs only payed $63 (though I think the sender had written a cheaper price?

)

2nd was air shipped item cost ~$100 didn't go through customs

Try and see if you can get the company to unpackage the item(s) and "rough them up" a bit and send them as second hand car parts - can't get charged on 2nd hand parts from what i'm aware.
