Another 4WS Problem

Postby celica_xr9145 » Fri Dec 04, 2009 9:56 pm

The dredded 4WS light has came up on my Celica GTR 4WS ST183 again.

It has came up with fault code 11 - ECU.

This happened 6 months ago and the mechanic 'Recentred the rear steering rack and reprogrammed the ECU.'

I know i'm not able to reprogram the ECU myself but does anyone know what is involved with recentering a rear steering rack?

At the moment, i don't have the cash to take it to the mechanic because it's nearly christmas :?

Pretty sure the average Joe mechanic cant reprogram your ECU, maybe they reset it to clear fault codes?

^^^ What he said, have you had a lok at your rear steering rack?? There is probably a sensor in there that wil be read along the length of the rack or otherwise, if sensor is bung you won't be able to fix it, if rack has somehow become unaligned (been doing any jumps lately) then i guess you could re-align it.
If it's a continuing problem do you really need the 4 wheel steering sytem, i'm sure you could build something to put the steering arms into so you have a fixed system in the rear, in effect replace the steering rack with a solid piece - i did it in a r32 skyline i had, made it so much more predictable when driving fast or if some oversteer happened

yep, do that. get rid of it. you may need to cert it. but a one off $400 will be cheaper in the long run.

Ah but if you make it so it mounts to the original mounting points you'l probably get sway with it, still technically will need a cert but unless you take your car to get wofs where a 4wsaphile works you'l probably never be asked about it.
Edited to make sense, you reckon he would get away with taking the light out of the dash if he takes the 4ws system out, seeing as it wouldn't be there anymore

if the warning light on the dash is on, or doesnt do its test thing, you can and probably will get failed for a wof  you may get away with it, but you may not!
It's a bloody horrible system anyway, a moving rear end is not fun!

tbh, i don't really wan't the hassle of getting rid of it. Would be easier to buy a ST182.

Its only got too last me a little over 6 months so then i can sell it and get something better 8)

Haven't been doing any jumps or anything, i spent all day waxing and cleaning it, went to start it and on comes the 4WS light :(

Last time i took it to the mechanic, it said on the reciept 'removed rack, recentred and refitted to car' and something about 'rear rack programming.'

So i don't think it's to do with the ECU then :? I think i'll have to wait until after christmas then take it back to the mechanic.

Is it an easy job to reset the 4WS ECU? Only problem with that is there are 2 of them :?

Could be worth a try.

Have tried already, ive removed fuses, etc but just doesnt make a difference :?

I don't mind 4WS, its great for everday driving but its simply too unreliable, its the 4th time its gone wrong now and have gone through 2 speed sensors :x

Although, it has been quite dangerous, i pulled out of a turning (i admit quite fast), 4WS light came on and and the car crabbed and span out. Was very close to an oncoming car!
That was the time the speed sensor went.
