Come down in price a lot then, they were pretty $$$.
They fail and the serpintine belt wears and breaks if you ignore it.
Happens to all ZZ engines

Bought the wife a Z Fielder auto a couple of months ago. I hate autos with a vengence but that said the Z is fine, yes i would have a 6spd any day but the wife wanted an automatic. Even in auto guise the 2ZZ feels a shite load more powerful than the 1ZZ, we originally were looking at NZ new TS hatches but soon started looking at fielder Z's as they were far better value. The key factors for our looking at TS's and then Z's was the front seats, the Z's sports seats are a shiteload more comfortable than the lower spec models, likewise the more sporting suspension setup is much more liveable longer term i am sure.

That said, shop around and test drive as many Z's as possible, we shortlisted 3 in the end and of those the car i ended up buying was worlds above the other two, price and mileage does not seem to be an indicator of quality out in the marketplace, the car with the highest milage was the most original and felt the best by a longshot.

Sorry for so many questions, just trying to cover all bases. :oops:

What about the BZ touring wagons room wise? (AE101/111??)
Does anyone know if there is about the same amount of storage between the BZ and the fielders?? Rear seats fold down to make a flat floor??

I had a Carib BZ touring wagon a few years ago and the Z is worlds ahead, it is huge by comparison, bootwise, headroom, rear legroom. I had to spend a shiteload on suspension to make it handle, the Z is great out of the box, the Z is a win win :wink:

Edit: yes both cars have fold flat rear seats

I had a Carib,changed to the Fielder,The Fielder (my 1 is a S) is a far better wagon all round,better performance,economy,room,ride,driver comfort and no cambelts.The Fielder boot is way bigger plus there is an extra lever on the passengers seat to fold down the backrest -perfect for carrying long items like ladders in the car.

Currently in a Carib and a couple of our newbies have the Fielders. A bunch of us are looking at buying new/as late model as possible in 2012 when our contracts roll over and we're required to have more modern vehicles.

These are the lone car on that list at the moment ;)

Hey guys, is anyone familiar with the facelifted (2004+) Fielder S.

We are looking at buying one and been looking at a few in the weekend and noticed some differences between pre-facelifted model.

Facelifted vs Pre-facelifted
HID vs regular bulbs (H4?)
Different design speedo
Drum brakes vs Disc brake at rear
Electric power steering vs Hydraulic power steering

Our most concern is the EPS system, while it's great for parallel parking, it didn't give us much 'road control feeling' as the hydraulic power steering. We have also been told it's more expensive to fix when it fails?

Anyone with experiences with the Toyota EPS? Cheers

My mate has a 6 speed 1.8L with VVTLi. It's done 145kms with no issues so far.

Pros:
* Economical
* Fairly quick
* It's a Toyota

Cons:
* You have to rev it pretty hard to get anything out of it (as you'd expect)
* We mock him senslessly because it looks like a people mover
* Could handle better

Get the 1zz-fe 2004+ Corolla.

My previous company car was one, had it for 3 years and put over 70,000kms on it and had no problems, and being a company car it got a good working over and all this time was carrying 100kg of stuff in the boot. Never had any problems with it. And neither did any of the other 13 technicians that drove them.

They have good low-mid pull for daily driving and are very good on gas.

We get new cars every three years and have recently got the new Corollas with the 1.5 engines (and damn CVT transmission) And most the guys are missing the old 1.8 with the 5 speed, including me.
AAAaannd it seems like the 1.5 combined with the CVT uses more fuel.

If I needed a daily car I would have bought my old company car.

I had a 2zz Feilder wagon with the 6sp and other than the noisy gearbox it was awesome. We did about 70, 000 ks in it and sold it 175000 ks and it was faultless. Cost me nothing other than a fan belt.
It was cheap to run and I thought the engine was great right through the rev range, it could idle along at 50 kphr in 6th gear happy as and at 100kphr you could chuck it down to 3rd and it was awesome at overtaking.
Great size, with the seats layed flat in the back we could get heaps of gear in, they are way bigger than a carib and the space is more usable than the newer caldinas.

Just had so much more character than the 1zz engine, I think they are premo and would buy another one tomorrow.

Luke,
Interesting to hear your experience with the CVT. I was really disappointed to hear the new auto went this way(instead of the "old" style trans). I've loved having the auto Carib for work and it looks like the new wagon will have to be a manual.

NO ONE has made a reliable, acceptable CVT and it looks like Toyota haven't cracked it either :(

If your work would let you get a 2006 you could get the previous model with the 1.8 and normal auto?

But yea... I don't rate the CVT very highly... I was sad when I heard we were getting them... sadder now driving it.
