Parts to buy for engine refresh 1GGTE

Postby AE86less » Sun Jan 10, 2010 12:48 pm

I've bought myself a GA70 1GGTE to go into my GX71. The engine has 170ish Km on it and has a run big end bearing. I bought it because I got the whole engine bay very cheap

I'm very sure that I will not be modifying this engine other than perhaps a few more pounds through the standard turbos. I'm just looking to restore the engine to close to new condition and not have to worry about the engine in my daily.

What I'm after is advice on what I'd need to buy to achieve this, whether it is neccessary/better to go genuine parts etc.

Go.

Edit: If price is prohibitive I'm also not averse to buying a new shortblock, but I'd like to rebuild firstly because I've never really opened an engine and secondly so I know that it's sound.

hunt on here Cat007 would be the one to talk to.
I am pretty sure that 1ggte stuff is hard to come by.

They are a very under rated motor and are well suited to a lighter chassis.

aftermarket stuff is almost non-existant for the 1ggte's now.

yes, some of the stuff is hard to get, even the likes of a headgasket can prove troublesome. i'd go fo the full seal kit from Japan through toyota as buying individually gets expensive FAST. I think the full kit is around 300-320 bucks.

As for mains and big ends, they are either 42 or 44mm diameter so it pays to check on this before jumping in to the wrong size. but they are pretty well priced.

the oil control rings and lower compression rings are cheapest if you buy 2 sets of 4k rings, but the top compression ring (1.2mm thick i think) is a bit of a hassle to find, i ended up going to bowden engine parts and buying 6 loose rings to make it come together. I think they are from a sohc vtec honda of some sort.

oil pumps- unless there is damage to the housing or gears just get it measured up, it'll probably be re-usable.

The only real mod i'd do is to open up the oil feeds to #1 and #6 bearings, i believe a 7mm drill bit does the trick but i can't be sure as it was a fair while ago.

if you can get your hands on a tidy set of N/A cams they are worthwhile to make a bit more power with no real downside.

Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions.

If you need any kit for the head (shims, valves, buckets etc.) the old tvis 4A(blue top?) kit works.

I've recently made a new dump pipe for my 1g, _vast_ improvement. I'd recommend this above all other cheap upgrades.

Full headgasket set will cost you ~250 from toyota.

I just want a nice standard 1G :) Less reliability issues, less money etc.

The car is just a daily and my goal is just to be able to overtake and not over heat at 110km/h like it is atm :)

Hopefully the overheating isn't due to some other problem

Also it might pay to change the frost plugs. They're a piece of cake to change and well worth it. And cheap. If you can find out the size I can see if my mate's got them on shelf.

The gasket set comes with stem seals IIRC!

But yeah - best to take the bearings out and measure them before buying a set.

mjrstar - is that 42/44mm the I/D or O/D? I can never remember.

I have the entire engine bay from the GA70, so radiator and piping etc plus a new water pump. I'd hope that replacing the entire cooling system should fix it!

I'll have a gander at the frost plugs, are there any hidden ones? Why do they need replacing?

About the bearings. So there are two standard sizes, 42mm and 44mm. Hypothetically, say the crank in the GTE is raped by my run bearing and I decide to use the crankshaft from my spare 1GEU and it's the other standard size it should fit with the correct bearings? If I needed a crank grind I would then be able to ask the outfit who recondition it what size bearing it will need?

^^Probably fairly n00b questions, but I am new to this

I/D as it is a measure of the crank diameter..

I believe the 1geu crank SHOULD fit but i can't be certain without rummaging through my garage.

best to pull apart the dead engine and see what sort of condition the crank and rods are in.

So, I've pulled apart both engines. The crank on the GGTE wasn't great and one rod was fairly ruined. The 1GEU was pretty mint.

I've measured both cranks and the diameters are bog standard (42mm Rod brgs & 55mm Mains), however the widths of the bearings I pulled out are odd at 18.7mm for mains and 17.8mm for the rods.

I've been speaking to Segedins (cheers for the reference Cat007), and they simply have no bearing to suit. The sizes they have (http://www.segedins.co.nz/, sorry I can't link to exact page) are:

Rod

18.9mm
18.18mm
17.18mm

Main

19.2mm

I've just checked the bearing shells against the crank and journal thing, the rod bearings have room to go up to a 18.9mm but the journal thing on the main bearing is not wide enough to house anything wider (though the crank is).

I hope that my ramble is understandable. Any advice would be appreciated.

try this dude, he's normally pretty helpful, I can't shed any light on exact dimensions, is it possible you have had a bit of thrust wear on the crank which has put your measurements oversize a bit?

I think my BE's are p/n 4B1101 from a 4k but don't take that as gospel.
