Anyone got any straight old sections of broken cars?

I'm really after flat and straight sections of cars, really panel steel off a car that's been crashed and someone has replaced a quarter panel or something. Want to replace the steel on my A pillars on the 85 notch project i have. prefer in Christchurch and preferably free or cheap as. let me know what ya have

Down columbia ave on the left side by the gravel screen (but on foot path) is an old bonnet, been sitting there for weeks, so prolly still there.

Cut up some old doors or something man :)

Failing that I have my eye on some ~3mm steel, full sheet if you want to go halves :lol:

3mm?!?!!!! Thats three times thicker than it needs to be, 8O but you were joking right? Panel steel is supposed to be 0.75mm thick. $20 should get you plenty of offcuts from local engineer that uses it.
Bonnets and roofs tend to use thicker steel than the rest of the car I think :?

Apart from the hassle of welding the two together? Would have thought it would be more hassle than its worth unless you already have all the stainless wire / gas required.

I was being serious about the 3mm haha, I wouldn't have thought it would be a disadvantage to use thicker steel on the likes of pillars. They are usually a couple/few thicknesses of panel steel anyway aren't they? :) I was only talking about the pillars though, the rusty pillars on my corona look to be a couple mm thick. i'm not after the 3mm sheet for panels haha :lol:

What about hatches?? We just happen to have something out the back of work, i.e hatch that i could use but want to know if it's going to be strong enough. Maybe either use single or double it up for the a pillar. And what should i ask for if it's unsuitable

How much of the pillar are you replacing??????

Don't be such a cheap bastard! Get some new metal, its SO MUCH nicer to weld. You won't need to clean any shit off before you can weld it.

3mm is $&#$% thick BZG|Bling, you will have much fun trying to cut and bend it to the right shape.
I reckon it would be best to use the same thickness steel as what you are replacing.

What kind of car is it? Can you cut the whole pillar out of a doner car? Then you can drill out all the spot welds and have very nice patch panels exactly the right shapes.......

Car is an ae85 notch, there are 2 sections about least 120mm long on driver and passenger side. Trying to find a donor car that someone is willing to chop something off is the big thing. What should i ask for when buying some??

Off cuts :lol: Go to a local sheetmetal place, you could try Davins which is on dyers road. Must be somewhere local to you, perhaps even a panel and paint shop might help you out.

I have a box of off cuts for when I get my act together. :oops:

edit: most body panels are 0.8mm, its the folding and forming that gives it the strength :) 3mm is pritty agricultural luke 8O . hope that sheet not outside my work :lol:

Another reason to use a brand new panel, is that it wont rust like the rest of the metal in the car.

It'll really throw off some archeologists in the future, they'll look at a pile of rusty dust and think it might be an 80s Toyota, but they'll be thrown off by the fact that one metal part still exists.
