Idea's for Speedo Please

Hiya,

I am fairly carefull about my speed, my policy is less than 10 over the limit but its a pain in the neck continually checking my speed as i drive along.

Im wondering if there are any after market speedos that would work with my MR2's electrical speedo (as well as the stock one, i would like them to both work). The idea being that i put this gauge within easy view of my perlipheral (spelling?) vision when looking at the road ahead, a bit like a monster tach but not as big.

I saw a few on trademe but they go up to 300km/h which is a bit rediculous. Ideally i would like one that went up to 150km/h (not that i have done that speed in a very long time)

Alternatively there is an aftermarket electronic speedos but they are $$$

Any suggestions/ideas that have worked for anyone?

Some sort of GPS possibly? it may be less hassle than fiddling with the wiring?

wasn't someone on here selling a defi rev/speed meter not long ago? i have one in my supra, and it has a heads up display that you sit up on your dash, and shines up on the windscreen. worked really well, but didn't have the sheet that you stick to the windscreen to help reflect it, so put insulation tape on the outside of the screen, and worked mint.

might be an option?

Or recognise how fast you are going by engine noise / speed that surroundings are passing by Works for me

Thanks for your posts gents, yeah i should be able to tell the speed from engine noise etc... but i tend to feel like 100kmh is too slow but only prepared to risk a <10kmh ticket... so i tend to sit on 109... pedantic i know.

Some good suggestions there, will have a look at the heads up links on trademe, the defis are way out of my budget unfortunately....

this nokia phone app is quite good. gotta have the right phone to go with it though. just sit it up in your phone holder on the dash

Why don't you just go the wreckers and find an MR2 that has the cruise control unit in it and install that?

A bit of pissing around, granted, but CC is great for long drives and the Toyota system is the best i've used (in terms of logical controls etc)

Mine has (had) cruise control. Sitting in a pile in the shed at the moment as one of the 3 throttle cables was frayed. Assuming you could find everything you needed (there's a lot to it...) it would be a bit of a pain to set up to be honest and not worth it. A GPS with an overspeed warning is far easier to sort.

Yeah just though of this actually. Only have experience with TomTom software which has a small section in the corner that goes red. Though I wouldn't buy a GPS just for that feature

Yeah I had the TomTom software on my old phone and the overspeed warning was great. Easy enough to turn off when you don't want it (in controlled situations...of course) and there when you need it.

Was also good to see how [in]accurate my speedo was too

The tom tom thing is a good idea, maybe ill just sort one of those and see how I go.

Id agree with the heads up display. I had the Defi one, and currently have a Garmin GPS. I found the HUD easier to read without taking my eyes off the road.

Is also VERY easy to install, basically just splice into the speed wire in the loom

I'm confused as to why you would want to put a big speedo in to replace the small one. I mean you still have to look at the speedo to see what speed you're doing. And on a track the last thing you want to have constantly in your view distracting you is a giant bloody speedo haha.

And how retarded at driving are you when you cant stay ~8kmph above or below the without concentrating on a speedo 24/7
