Does anyone have a car trailer + two vehicle + 2 hours?

Hi all,

I've purchased a parts car MX5 which is not road legal, from lower hutt. I need to collect it this week, as the seller needs it off the property due to selling the house.

Possibly it was a bit silly to purchase something BEFORE organizing a method of collecting it, but hey, bargains cant be missed, right?

So, I'm wondering if anyone in the Wellington region has the following:

Tow vehicle
Car trailer
Approx two hours of spare time, to meet me at the place where the car is, load onto the trailer, drive to my place on Paekakariki Hill Rd (approx 25mins drive from Naenae where the mx5 is atm).

The parts car starts and is drivable, so should be easy to load onto the trailer.

I can reimburse with 2 dozen beers of your choice, or equivalent monetary value. Im not entirely sure how this sort of arrangement goes, so if that is unacceptably low balling, let me know :)

why not just get it towed its pretty cheep my mate got his project car from welly to pram done for like 140 i think so yours would be alot cheaper or hire a car trailler from hirepool and use a mates car to tow it

Sorry I don't have a trailer, but if the parts car is mobile you could just 'fake tow' it.

ie just attach a long rope to you other mx5 and pretend to tow it. Technically that should be legal.

I've done this a few times for parts cars.

Lol I was just laughing at the possibility of passing it off as legal.

My dad has an mx5 too but don't think he's after any parts, unless that has an LSD?

Unsure/unlikely if it will have an LSD, but if it does I'll let you know. The early models came with a viscous LSD as an option, but its not the strongest.

I managed to get a torsen LSD out of a 94 1800cc from mx5mart for $400inc gst on the weekend, he had HEAAPPPS of spare diffs so maybe your dad could give him a call.

He actually has one already but either it didn't mount up or they have different driveshafts...can't remember which. His is the 1800cc one in the same shape as above. Its turbocharged so guess he'll need to avoid the viscous version then.

The early NA6 (1600cc) diffs had a smaller input flange than the later model NA8 (1800cc) diffs. The NB8 (rounder shape) diffs had the same larger flange, but different half shaft setups. From what I gather, if you have the matching NB8 Diff/drive shaft/half shafts and hub carriers you can run a NB8 diff in a NA6 car.

When I got my torsen, the guy also gave me the matching drive shaft. But when I disconnected my driveshaft last night, it lined up with the torsens flange. One of the bolts was incorrect, so I suspect the diff in my car has already been replaced...with an open diff, lol.

no idea if that is any use to you/your dad.

Cheers mate, might see what he ended up doing with the LSD and see if he knows about that Mx5 parts place.

Thats illegal, anything on the road must have a wof and reg, including things being towed.

Not correct.

A vehicle temporarily under tow does not need reg or wof.

Sadly I'm not at work this week, otherwise I'd bombard you with information.

However, since I'm not at work, I have a raging case of "CBF". However I suspect you probably know me well enough by now to know that I don't generally go to the trouble of making stuff up ;). It is just far too much effort.

Refer: vehicles on A-frames as an example of non road legal cars you will have seen being towed around.

I would have thought that brake lights and indicators need to either be visible on the tow vehicle or operational on the vehicle being towed.

Other than that I wouldn't think it is a problem.

It would be a bit silly if it was illegal if you ask me.
