When the original wrx's came out they had about 230hp and the sti had 260ish
As they went through the V 1-6 this changed and by the time we get to the version 4,5 and 6 the stock wrx was in reality putting out around 165kw atw or around 200kw at the fly. Then when version 7 came in the wrx started to be officially exported to the USA this meant that the wrx and STI had to be properly seperated, So the wrx was chopped back to around 140kw atw and the sti put down around 165kw. (Yes non RA versions 7's were that bad) However with the dawn of the version 8 this crept up again and the wrxs got back to around 150kw and the sti's around 180kw.

If you buy a version 4-6 wrx you can expect a good 250-270hp at the fly. Or around 180-200kw

Yeah the wrx's and the sti's from iirc 3-6 were all factory rated at 280hp (japanese gentleman's agreement / tax / emissions issues blah blah)...even though the STi was in reality putting out more than this. Same deal with the evos and twin turbo supras and everything else of that era. Quite a lot of them were 'accidentally' or 'unofficially' exceeding this limit

I don't think this is correct, factory figures are always at the flywheel (from what i've seen, correct me if I am wrong!) so I seriously doubt a wrx would ever have had 165kw's at the wheels from factory! More like 165kw at the flywheel/engine.

For example I remember at a dyno day an Evo4 which would have the usual 280/205kws at the flywheel (factory figure) made 160kws atw with a 3" exhaust.

Dyno figures are very inconsistent, even if it is same brand dyno, some will over-read while others will under-read. I don't think anyone is calibrating them these days, as they are used in "before-and-after" scenarios and actual numbers are irrelevant.

Yep, well known fact that one. This was a dyno known to read quite high actually.

Wow, much more than I would have thought. But I guess the dyno readout point comes into play. If I was to buy a Subaru I would have gone straight for the STI, but those WRX's are definitely bang for buck if they are that close to the STI.

I think the thing is that if your looking at a pre version 7 wrx there isnt enough of a price difference between the wrx and Sti to not buy the sti. You can get a type r version 4 sti for 12k in good nick. Where as the version 7 and up the wrx and sti still cost a good 5k difference.

My stock evo 6 put out 178kw at Speedtech, so by adding a magical made-up conversion number you could come up with 205kw... but i'm only ever interested in at-the-wheels numbers in a stock configuration... and 205kw they are not.

It's about time car manufacturers were made to advertise the specs as at the wheels rather than at the flywheel with no drivetrain loss etc....

Toyota might be in trouble then with their 80kw cars
