The Give way to your right rule about to change?

Postby B1NZ » Thu Mar 04, 2010 7:35 pm

Your opinions please, So I've only heard briefly about this proposed change, can anyone enlighten me or direct me to a website explaining it.

As far as Im concerned I don't mind the way it works, I learnt to drive with it in place and have no problems with the way it is currently.

Maybe we could put up a poll and see what the general consensus is on this later on once we hear both sides of the story

Dumbest Idea Ever.

If the rule doesn't work because people don;t follow it, will changing the rule work?

I predict a massive increase in crashes if it goes ahead.

The rule doesn't work cause it's crap and causes too much confusion. It was much better before they changed to the Victorian system which was designed to account for Melbourne trams, why we ever adopted it is beyond me.

I don't know why we kept it for so long when Victoria got rid of it years ago resulting in a big drop in the number of accidents.

I predict the exact opposite, that's what happened when Victoria got rid of it and I see no reason why the same will not happen here.

See, I don't get that, how is it in the least bit confusing?

because you have to get NZ drivers to follow it...

Its been the rule since the 70s hasn't it?

So anyone that got their license in the last 30-40 years should know the rule, but they don't. As I said in the other thread, its not a confusing law, people just don't follow laws in general

It is confusing but not in the way you're thinking. The interpretation is simple, but often the vehicle you have to give way to has to give way to another vehicle so you should be safe to go. However unless you're a mind reader then you don't know if the other person thinks there is enough of a gap...result confusion and accidents.

Without the "left turning traffic gives way to everyone" part of the right hand rule then you eliminate the uncertainty and need for psychic powers completely, making everything much simpler, so even the stupid people have a better chance of coping ;)

The way I see it from what I know about it, The current rule works for me:

If I'm turning left and a car coming towards me is turning right into the same street I give way or I get my door and possibly myself wasted.

If the proposed new law applied and was the opposite and I had right of way turning left, then if the other driver doesn't obey the rule I still get wasted when its not my fault.

How does changing that make it safer, We are our own country, why do we have to be sheep and follow what everyone else around the world is doing?

once again they pull out band aids to fix a gapping wound..
when will they get to the root of the problem and make licenses harder to get and actually police simple infractions more.

you can have all the rules and laws in the world, but if they arent policed properly, then who cares?

For example the "new" cellphone law.. there was already a law which was in place to tackle this.. the distractions while driving, or whatever its called. No one policed it so they made a new law.

Ive stopped using my phone while driving, but see countless people using their phones while driving, even police cars have driven past, but done nothing.

The give way rule is no different, people think they own the road and drive accordingly.

The current rules are the least efficient and most dangerous possible.

Fixing the rules to what the other countries do will result in less crashes, and less confusion for those that never got their heads around the stupidity of the change in 1977.

Can someone please explain properly and fully the proposed new rules.
As everything i have seen/heard sounds very very confusing and illogical.

My concern is that the Police and AA both claim that 17% of all crashes are at intersections and they want to lower this!

17% crashes at intersections
83% crashes elsewhere - straight roads?

So if you reduce the 17% then the 83% must rise.

Is it just me or should we not aim to have all crashes at intersections rather then all crashes god knows where?

As for the rule, we are $&#$% either way as NZ drivers are $&#$% retards.
Although I do think that there will be a large increase to start off but crashes will be reduced over time.

See the bottom one? How often are T intersections like this not governed by a Give Way sign, making it the scenario of new proposed law anyway???
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

So where's the gain from that? How is it "safer"?

What if there's a 3rd car at the intersection, you're driving it and coming from the right of that 4 way intersection, suddenly you have to think: Now I have to give way to him (red car) .... But he has to give way to that guy (green car)..... So if I go I'm ok, but what if he thinks he can beat the green car, he will hit me... arrgh I'm confused :?

In the case of the T-intersection, the stopped traffic in the middle of the straight road, turning right, will move out of the way quicker (turn first)
In the case of the 4 way intersection, the left turning traffic has less other traffic to consider before making the turn, therefore removing itself from the intersection quicker.
