It's quite hard to get insurance for a race/rally car, and for the amount of use and general risk while on closed roads, it's generally not worth it. When you build a car like this it is barely ever an appreciating asset. Most people are lucky to retrieve 50% of their development cost, so it's all a labour of love.
IMO anything that you've put that much of your own time and effort into becomes a part of your life. It is as much a family member as any cat, cactus or other "asset" as it is a snapshot of what a person has done with their time.
RIP that guys starlet.

Quite a few times Distrb has told me about this car; what had been done to it, how long it had taken etc.
Its a sad sight when something like that goes up in smoke, literally.

really gutted to hear about this car being destroyed. I feel his pain after watching a rolla wagon off mine fall off the back of the tow truck... had to get the chassis cut in half and welded with another one but it was never the same car again

Aaron, I think what you fail to understand is that it doesn't matter if it's 'just a Starlet', it doesn't matter if it's 'just a car', it doesn't matter WHAT it is.
It is something that someone has put a lot of effort into and has become affectionate towards. Human beings do that all the time.
Is it so hard to have a little compassion and empathise for his situation? I'm sure theres something you would be highly gutted to lose that we all wouldn't shed a tear for.

Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

Poor bastard
That would be gut wrenching. He will never get to race it and he'll never get back those 10yrs of effort, never mind the money.
That is why I have a 2kg in my Landcruiser, 1kg in the racecar and another 1kg in the girlfriends car. I wouldn't hesitate using them for someone elses car either - even if it was 'just a Starlet'

I heard about this car burning down from my flatmate who helped with some aspects of this build, just came to read the thread and saw Snwtoys posts - and started thinking the exact same as the above. This is one of the most I've ever felt like someone posting on a forum has needed a really solidly delivered face punch.
I can't believe the shit I read there, what a complete ass. The point Del' was making (well the way I feel about it, and read it) is that we have a lot of things in life which are there just to suit our passion. Its not a case of "There is a function I need performed, and this easily replaceable item can perform it".... its a case of blood, sweat and tears going into building something over years.
Money gone, compromises made, expectations being built and eventually the rewards to be reaped after completing the build. I am far from being a big fan of KPs, but for fuxake - I can appreciate that someone obvious put a huge effort into that build and is clearly going to be heart broken by the loss. The financial side is unlikely going to be the first thing that went through his mind when it went up in flames.

ooh dang. poor guy
sounded like an impressive kp! would like to see a build thread if one exists.
by that looks of that it's a complete writeoff

I totally feel for the guy
It not the value of the car or the sum of its parts
It the time and effort that have gone into it, and the enjoy that was gained from owning it that make it become a part of you.
Some people garden and get off on growing nice plants and stuff, if they were to have a flock of locusts destroy there garden they would be heart broken
Some people like to make fancey cakes and ice them up really nicely, if they fridge were to fail over night and the cake was to melt or get ruined they would be heart browkn and cry
Value of an object is very objective, geeze I have a collection of soft drink cans from around the world and if some body was to crush those cans I'd be seriously sad as they mean alot to me but maybe not to somebody else they are jsut rubbish
Just becasue you don't see value in it doesnt mean others don't
So you saying that if your car get stolen with all your camera gear inside it, I can have a laugh about it becasue I don't give a shit about photgraphy and can't belive people waste thousand of dollars on camera gear
I know you are going to reply I wouldn't care becasue I'm insured because you seem like a "c**t"
I'm sure the owner of this vechile would of had insurance if it could have been gained but more often then not with a vechile that is for motorsports purposes you often can't get insurance
Why is it a poor financial decsion?
You brought a Caldina that could be considered a poor financail decsision couldn't it?
I thinking a punch in the face will be to messy because "Shit Splatters"

I did say it would be a bummer for the guy, but I can still laugh if I want.

Meh just rung a bell...well at the very least there is stil one hot 20V starlet in wgtn still in the build
totally feel for this guy though. Ten years is a long time and something like that sort of just becmes part of your life. Your work on it every weekend like you feed your dog ever night. When my partners father moved to australia he had to get rid of his old holden he had sitting in the garage that he told his father when he passed away he would hold onto and finish it. The money was never there to do it and that much became clear, just it not being there anymore was too much to handle...
