A complete guess here but maybe the viewer numbers sugested are the combined numbers of views. By that I mean on person can see a small part of ten matches and be counted ten times. Just a guess.

if you are refering to my post then yes im assuming thats what cumulative refers to. However the statistics are still relevent because it refers to cumulative for the wrc statistics as well.

For what it's worth, every town I have lived in (3 in South Island one in north) and many others I have visited, there has been a very strong culture based around rugby and drinking. With that comes, as sergei put it, meatheadness.
I would not say it is as much as sergei, but it most certainly is masses more than those of you saying 0.1% or whatever. Spend winter evenings in or around bars in pretty much any town in NZ and you will see the results of it.
Often entire teams out drinking and causing trouble which can include hitting people with hand bags.
NZ as a whole is too alcohol focused, and the rugby scene just as much if not moreso.

That's not quite how I would put it, but that is a big part of it. The booze and thuggery culture promoted by rugby clubs etc in this country.
As much as you would like to deny it there is a large percentage of players/fans involved in it, certainly more than a tiny minority.

Define 'promotion of thuggery' by a club. Most clubs (whether rugby, soccer, other sports, RSA etc) exist to maintain a little bit of tradition and respect while having a good time.

I have witnessed many cases when its the guys who give up sport, and no longer in the club 'family', for want of a better word, that are the ones that go off the rails.

Promotion of thuggery: The team, often in their uniform jackets, out drinking and fighting in the streets. With the team elders laughing it off.

Well in 6 years of premier rugby in auckland I have yet to see that. Perhaps the Jafa's are more civilised?

The only true incident I can recall up here that was actually rugby club related, was a certain halfback throwing a bottle in the clubrooms. Rumour is that he has lost his auckland contract as a result.

HI guys, some very valid points, but i will cut and paste tomorow, as Friday nite is a safe nite for a few beers as the Rugby issues come on a Saturday day in Timaru, as the brawl for being on the losing team, and brawl for winning as well..

Plenty of it in small towns. If it wasn't rugby, it would be soccer brawls like they have in Europe.
Nothing to do with the specific sport - small town life is boring and the everpresent lowest common denominator of society needs an outlet.

Another factor is a lot of those guys would have a sense of entitlement, and feel that because theyre a local rugby rep they can get away with acting like a muppet in a country pub.

That being said, I think its a minority in the greater scheme of things.

I've been a league (!) supporter for a while and having gone to quite a few games at Mt Smart for instance, I can probably recall only a couple of occasions where I've seen anything even close to a fight. Despite the copious amounts of booze being consumed. People come in family groups, mates, whatever - the atmosphere is always awesome and everyone has a good time.

Go to a pub in Timaru on a Saturday night,

and you can guarantee anyone who is being a dick and trying to pick a fight, was playing rugby earlier in the day.

Rugby dicks is the common phrase we use,

and they are one of the reasons we dont go to the pubs that much on a Saturday anymore.

The RWC could be having a game in my back yard and home,
and I would be inside watching something else on TV.

this is just a big bash on rugby by those who seem a bit ignorant of what 9 out of 10 NZers prefer.

If rugby players and fans go out drinking as it is just the way to celebrate a big win or a hard fight on the field. Seems like they earnt it to me. There will always be those that take it too far but dont forget that is not restricted to rugby. You are steroetyping a bit

from my upbringing, 9/10 men prefer trying to grope (or get it on) with a woman than to chase each other round a field in tight shorts, groping each other, using a piece of pigskin as an excuse for such gropage.

From my expernce out in town in hamilton I've found the guys in rugby uniforms to be pretty good. I've never had a hiding from one and I've had plenty. They seem to realize they are being watched and judged more than other people and as far as fans go meatheads are meatheads no matter what they are into.
