Ideas for replacement alarm remote?

Postby Sick Puppy » Sun May 16, 2010 11:39 pm

Okay, I don't want this to sound as dodgy as I think it does, so here goes...

My alarm remote has seen better days, and I have that one only. While I'm sure I can get the shell replaced, it would be nice to have a spare too.

Is it possible to 'retune' an alarm remote from someone else's car so that it can work your one? Say, from a wrecked one? If I need to buy a new remote then so be it, I'd just rather not have to shell out $100+ for one, is all!

Your thoughts and ideas on this are appreciated- thanks!

edit: I am taking this into an alarm tech in Wellington, reason I'm asking is that knowledge is useful. :)

Hey mate

What alarm brand do you have??

Remotes get learnt into the alarm so in most cases if you have a working one you can code another remote no matter if its new or been used on another alarm. If it is an old fixed code remote then its a matter of soldering in the remote itself in most cases.

Hey Brad, it's a Dynatron, remote is the two button model with green LED.

I believe that would make it a D3x00, as the D7x00 came with a blue LED in the remote.

So either D3400, D3600 or D3800 depending on how its specced.

Yeah, I figured it wasn't the 7X00 series one, as the remote had a green LED... I'll find out the spec once I take it into an installer this week, was curious as to whether I had any options other than buy a new remote- like I said, I don't really fancy the prospect of having to bend over to pay for a new one, if I can just recycle an old one!

I believe i have an old D3 series remote floating around you could have, i imagine its compatiable if it has a green LED.

either track down an old one or head to a dealer in welly and they will have new items. they are usually around the 90 buck mark.

it will need to be taught to your system so will need to get someone with know how to do it or explain how to anyways..

And you can usually get the cases for like 20 dollars..... new.....

Cheers for that, I've seen that site in my hunting, and once I get my crap together, plan on giving him a call- the rest of my cunning plan (okay, not really that cunning) is to replace the case on my current one (which while working, is completely shagged) and 'retune' Boosted/Craigs one once I get it, which involves the above website or another place I know. Then voila! Two remotes :P

And then I can sort the rest of my to do list lol How I missed the fact that my new car has two differently-coloured headlights is beyond me...

I know they're only a hundred or so on trademe and at dealers, but we're on one income at the mo, we're moving soon and between an upcoming service and a few bits and bobs (a la my to do list)... lets just say I'm embracing the other options! lol

Thanks for the plug Tom!

Sick Puppy: I keep the TX-11 remote case in stock so should be able to help you out, I can normally fix old ones (the switches often fail) which works out much cheaper then a new one. Please feel welcome to touch base with me when you're ready.

Cheers,
Julian

Hey, how long did it take for them to program the new remote to your alarm?

I think all up it took about 30 minutes for everything, but tuning the remote and clearing out any other ones stored in it took about five minutes? All up, I got a case replaced, a used one from another car retuned (which reminds me...), any 'other' remotes cleared from the system, a new PIN, the alarm set so it doesn't 'chirp' when I arm/disarm it (as that really annoys me) and a heap of useful information! Great price, and money well spent...

As and a random aside, thanks again Boosted/ Craig- that remote is much appreciated! [smacks his forehead for forgetting this in the first place lol]
