Would be ace if the cops interviewed him in hospital and it playe dout like this:

Cop 1: Ok, so you been subject to kidnapping and GBH, requiring surgery, tied to a tree oh thats no good.

Cop 2: Hmm, so any known enemies...oh you stole the guys car?...and he tracked you down and beat you...

Cop 1: Do you have his contact details? ...555? 1234, got it, great. Ok we'll give him a ring, with a job offer, we could do with a guy like that on our team, but I think we're all done here?

Cop 2: Yep, think we have exhausted all avenues with that, tough luck champ.

Now I wonder... Will this guy reoffend, do you think? Or the next time he goes to steal a car, do you think he's going to remember getting beaten within an inch of his life and just think "Nahh..." and walk away?
Motorsport is like sex. You could take it to track and have a long, enjoyable session, or you could take it to the strip and get it over with in less than 20 seconds.

These kind of people never learn, that is why they steal in first place.

I dont know, most thieves keep doing it cause they get away with it, or get some weak punishment from the courts. Good solid beating may give them a bit of a wakeup
1988 KE70 Wagon - Slowly rusting
1990 NA6 MX-5 - because reasons
2018 Ranger - Because workcar
1997 FD3S RX-7 Type R - all brap, all the time

Hahaha. Well I bet he wasn't expecting to get the shit beaten out of him for stealing that one, so why not start expecting it for the next one? ;)
