For sure there are roads that are bad in the wet. Hell today I have driven through 300mm of water so hitting that at speed would be a disaster  However, although roads have less grip in the wet, I would consider crap tyres to be more of a problem. If you buy cheap / average tyres they are rubbish in the rain 8O . Not sure how to improve roads for the rain though as really that comes down to slowing down. Don't hit a corner @ 100km/h in the wet just because the speed limit says 100 etc. I barely hit 100km/h today while out driving as surface flooding is near on invisible on some roads. Could blame that on the roads, or could blame any accidents that happen on the flooded areas are due to drivers to paying attention.

/when will it stop blardy raining?!!! I can't even go my normal way home as water would start coming into my car

Definitely agree with you there.

I just don't think the roads are taken care of to a certain standard as they are in other countries.

I dunno, maybe thats just my perceptoin from a karters point of view, where your bum is a few mm from the ground :D

I have driven in Australia (NSW/QLD) and roads there are of similar quality if not worse.

No! I was just giving an example! Although now you're giving me ideas..... If I put on larger tyres, it'd give me more clearance and higher top speed....

NZ roads are crap. And the crapness of them is a contributing factor to the road toll, along with the average age and condition of the vehicles that drive on them, the lack of car control taught to new drivers, and the amount of clueless tourists/ new immigrants who should really catch the bus.

All of this (bar the training part) has bugger all to do with the crash in question though :!:

My opinion:

1) Horsepower restirctions will NOT reduce the road toll
2) Speed restrictors on cars will most definately INCREASE it.

Would love to see some evidence to the contrary.

1) Was already tried elsewhere and ended up being a dysmal failure with no reduction in the road toll (on the contrary - an increase).

To be expected when you ban people from driving modern, safe cars in favour of old sh#tbuckets with no safety equipment and 1-star crash safety rating.

These pointless government excercises tend to be a nightmare to implement with thousands of staff hours and millions of taxpayer dollars wasted to no benefit at all.

Here's the example closest to home:
http://www.caradvice.com.au/6587/p-plater-vehicle-restrictions-under-fire/

2) If you've ever driven a speed-resticted truck (I've driven a few) you would know that pretty much none of them are set the same as the other. Just like there are minor variances in the speedometers of all cars vs actual speed, all restrictors have a variance of +/- 1-3 km/h. Now imagine this being applied in a practical sense to every vehicle on the road. Every driver would be driving with their foot to the floor, letting the restrictor cut in, except invariably some will be slower than others resulting in bunching, frustration, shambolic overtaking, massive traffic congestion and accidents at every corner.

Also as mentioned above head on crashes will ncrease due to people spending longer time on the wrong side of the road.

If this were to be introduced you can also bet your bottom dollar that there will be hundreds of people (myself being one of them) who will refuse to participate in this social experiment and de-activate the restrictor at the earliest opportunity.
The flipside of this is the thousands of other drivers will be naturally assuming that the car coming towards them on SH1 is doing 100km/h. When it's me (or someone else) doing 140km/h. So when thy pull out to pass the car doing 98.3 km/h, even though they thought they had plenty of room to complete their maneuvre its all gonna turn to sh!t mighty quick.

If the car intended to overtake (unlike petrol tankers) then restricting speed is a big mistake.

I suggest even doing other way around, allow burst +20kph on overtaking for up to 10 seconds.

This will fix all the idiots who hold you up when you cannot overtake them, and then speed up to 110 when you can overtake them. Also there will be less morons overtaking at 100kph because they are affraid to get a ticket, even though it is safer to go over the limit than staying on the wrong side of the road for prolonged periods.

If we allow government force limiting all vehicles, here is the ultimate scenario:

1) There will be GPS/Accelerometer device tied into ECU of the car with remote shutdown option.
2) You will be billed for each unit of road you use dynamically - since now they can tell you where you have been.
3) Automatic infringements (parking, zoning or whatever).
4) You will not be able to use the vehicle if the government decides that is not "safe" (in case of protests/curfew/volcano eruption/what not).
5) Cops will have automatic pull over button. Your car will pull over automatically and shut itself down.
6) Car will refuse to start if your licence has expired, if you haven't got warrant, you are wanted, or if it detects non-standard parts installed.

etc.

speet restrictors would be fail.

i still think that taking kids out of turbochargeds wrx's and evo's will save lives.

the arguements put forward in that article are valid, how ever how many kiwis are going to buy a brand new supercharged merc for their kids to drive?????? really???

the issue here is with those "pocket rockets" that are readily available for a small chunk of change.

Comments/questions like that fall very much in the 'ass-hat' category.

This is a forum, for discussing OPINIONS not spending countless hours researching through car crash archives to find information that we all know about already.

Sure needing to see proof for some things is necessary, but common!

Because our government is f'ing retarded and too scared to get into debt to create an infrastructure. Look at America (haha this is going to cause a horrible flame war lol), they're in hell debt, but check out their infrastructure. Their major cities, New York, San Diago (not a wales vag|na) make NZ look so pathetic it's laughable.

But I digress....
