I used to flat with a guy about 35 years ago who, about 3 times a year, would take the ferry after work on a Friday night and drive his Mk3 Cortina non stop to his mother's house in Invercargill.
At the time he was in his late 30's and about 15 stone or more, so he was no athlete, the roads were nothing like they are now and the Cortina was the 1600cc, 4 on the floor model with wallow steering.
The rest of you must be soft!

the graveyard ferry is such a bad idea lol.I tried it in febuary people rush to find the best bit of floor because the seats are too crap to sleep in. spend the extra $25 bucks and get the morning ferry and sleep in a bed instead of a floor.

.....now I wait for fangsport to tell me to harden up
ya pays the extra $15 to Mr Bluebridge and get a cabin, a shower and a cooked breakfast. one just needs to claim he is a commercial driver and is on holiday.

the beauty of claiming you are a commercial driver is you also get on the boat early. after i got that rollcage kit off you, i popped in to see my bro for a bit and was loaded on the boat by 11pm for the 3am sailing. had nearly 4 hours kip before the boat departed.

Thats the way I used to do it. Booking the 1:30am ferry means you get to do the whole north island in daylight, muck around in Wellington for a couple of hours to sort food and stuff, ferry across and get in to Picton at 4:30am. Was perfect in the summer as the sun was just about to come up and you could pass all the trucks just outside Picton and have the road completely to yourself until Chch
