Also from looking at the nzta fees web page http://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicle/registration-licensing/fees.html it looks like it's $30 cheaper to cancel the rego and get a new set of plates and 1 years rego for $548 for some reason, anyone know if there's some catch here?

Yes, the compliance check you will need before re-registering. Depending on vehicle, about $250.

Oh and also the $1.49 difference between 1-3500kg and 3501-6000kg. WTF!

BZG|Bling wrote:As above the alternative is suing each other if you have an accident to get money to pay your medical bills. Or pay rego and get 'free' treatment. I know which i'd rather do :) Likewise i'd rather pay any insurance and not have to claim, than have to claim. As if you need to claim ACC you have been injured in an accident and will have associated hassles involved with your recovering. No hassle > hassle

Actually the alternative is probably private health insurance - which may or may not be a good thing. It would be good in that it would be purchased for an individual, not for a vehicle (eliminating the multiple payments for people with more than one vehicle), but unlike ACC (or atleast the original concept of ACC, from which the current system is reasonably departed), you'd be assessed/profiled and have to pay based on your likelihood of being injured, which would probably be bad for most people on this site (young males are always hurting themselves). Being commercialised/competitive, it would probably lead to trimming of a lot of fat in terms of needless beauracracy within the organisation, which should reduce costs. Would it be cheaper overall? I suspect probably not, especially for those of us who are probably quite high risk.

Don't forget those that can't get health insurance, or if they manage to find a company that will cover them.... charges would be enormous.
