battery in boot question

Postby deaf_rattle » Fri Jul 09, 2010 7:38 am

I have the battery mounted in the boot with a 140 amp circuit breaker inline with the 1 gauge from battery to starter motor.

Been talking to the guy who rebuilt my alternator and he reckons i shouldnt bother with c/b inline to the starter, but maybe run one from the power cable from starter motor to dist block (feeds alt and other engine bay power feeds)

He said if i wanted anything inline, i should just run a kill switch.

thoughts?

I wouldn't want cable cable of carrying the current that 1awg can running 4m through my car from a power source without any short-circuit protection. I'd definitely be keeping the circuit breaker

I ran a CB for my battery in boot setup.
I only used a 100 amp from memory. It was fine the entire time I had the car.

plenty of people will run without any sort of fusing in their cable and never have a problem, just like how many people in the US ride motorbikes without helmets but never die from head injuries because they haven't crashed yet.

When you have a cable capable of carrying significant current, and this cable is connected to a car battery, if you somehow wear through your insulation - be it chafing at a firewall pass-through, something sharp/heavy being placed on top of the cable, or even an accident that causes the insulation to be cut, you'll have several hundred amps running through that cable, and it can get very hot, easily hot enough to start a fire. There are a few documented incidents on forums of people who have lost their pride and joy because it burned to the ground after a fire caused by a battery cable shorting.

Not worth the risk IMO when a fuse or circuit breaker is only $20-50
