car painting prep work

hey guys, im going to give my car a sand and prep as im going to give it a temporary coat of satin black (cant afford to paint it the colour i want yet) its pretty straight so i just wana sand it down and get it ready

anyway i want to find out how i go about it, what kind of sanders to use, what grade paper etc

any help would be great

Why not just wait till you can afford to paint it the colour you want?

Either way, check out google etc as its a pretty common job that will have been covered 1,000,000+ times.

Save yourself the money/time/effort and just do it once. Lots of good info/advice below.

my gf dads a car painter so i can get it done for pretty good price if i do all the prep and sanding myself and satin blacks a good base colour for what im going to be painting it anyway, and i just want it to be all one colour for now (as its all patchy from having a few panel jobs) as my main goal is to get the motor rebuilt and driving and thats going to chew up most of my funds

just rough it up and paint it for now if you are worried, but id just wait until you can get it done properly the first time.
if you are going to be driving it around, you just dont know what stones, keys, pedestrians or other objects are going to hit your car.

and really, paint isnt that expensive.

paint is only 40% of the cost of a good paint job, you pay more for good prep and spraying talent then the paint,

Paint costs less than 1/3rd of the total cost of the average paintjob. The real time/cost is in the prep and finishing.

can get all paint, thinners etc etc for less than $400 if you look around. if anyone can find a panel shop willing to do a re spray for less than $1200 let us all know.

if not become mates with a painter man, iv got a couple mates willing to P&P my car for materials plus like a hundy when im ready

paint work is simple..


cheaper = worse job
more expensive = better job.

I did my time as an apprentice and there are some exceptions to the rule but they are few and far in between.
