Can't find anything in the LTSA's site... surprise surprise...

But is this still around? Whats the cut off? 30 or 40 years?

Closest I have found is here


Stating 40 years or older do not need continious rego. but doesn't give any more details.....

40 years+ for classic rego. Can get classic insurance on 30+ tho. AFAIK.

Tried to rego the XX as a classic, got told 40 years.

There should be cheaper regos on dedicated motorsport cars, I pay full registration for mine which leaves that garage maybe once every month or so, Less than 5000kms a year including driving to events, my insurance company sees the lower risks but the government does not, or maybe they do and see it as a cash cow :lol:

i seem to remember something about there being two different older car reg's. Classic 20/25+ and vintage 30/40+

It's been 40 years since at least 1988 when my old 1950 Ford Pop got re-reg'd as 1948 in order to get cheap rego. You automatically qualify from the start of the year so if you are at 39 years only rego enough to you to January.

Even that's a bit of a misunderstanding. Once a car passes 20th birthday then for the purposes of first registration it doesn't need to have been built to a frontal impact standard, and 1989 or older vehicles don't need to meet current emission standard requirements.

But they still have to comply with a hundred other things, just like a newer vehicle.

I'd love to know how these wonder e-rumours get started, because there are some including "classic" imported cars that pop up once a week on some NZ internet car forum.
