Strange noise from the engine bay(Caldina 3SGTE)

Not sure what is going on...
My car runs well in dry road, but not in wet.
When the road is wet or it's raining, there wold have some kind of grinding noise and vibration came out from the engine bay. Not sure it's from engine or transmission... Also, it seems to loose power when the noise and vibration comes.

Any idea what was going on?
I thought maybe some water went into the engine thru intake.. but I checked the filter straight away and it was dry.
It happens only when the road is wet or is raining. Never happen in dry...

Please help!

Sorry to drag this one up again, but I'm pretty sure this has just happened to me.

Due to this mornings crap weather in Auckland.

Sounds almost like it is the centre diff. In the dry I have never heard this noise.

A slight loss of power untill the noise goes away. I did go through a few deepish puddles just before the noise happened.

Any Ideas???

Sorry to hear that.
Because it doesn't happen often, it's very hard to figure out what was going on...

I bought my car to the mechanic but they couldn't find out the reason as well.

Please let me know if you found it....

will probably be your driveshaft rubbing on exhaust.

my st195 had the same prob, when the exhaust was hot and parts of it were getting wet it didnt expand uniformly hence twisting a little bit.

probably need the alignment of your exhaust tweaked a little...

Hmmm... interesting...

wonder if that is the same problem that I have when the car is cold and turning right. Once its warm the noise goes away. The sound is definately not as harsh as when driving through heavy rain etc.

My car used to have rare noise when it's cold. But i found out it was the air leaks between the manifold and block. When it's cold, the exhaust gas leaks from the tiny gap. When it's hot, the gap closes up.
It's gone after I tighten the manifold bolts.

Might be a different noise. The one I was talking about sounds like it is coming from the rear of the car. Think it might be a bearing.

You wouldnt believe this chris - but after our talk this morning I suspect the same thing just happened to me! Then I remembered its happened twice before...

Conditions:
Wet to very wet - and its only ever occured in these conditions.

Symptoms:
Starts out with an unusual vibration - as if exhaust is touching some part of the chassis etc. I had this for about 5 mins or so. Its road speed related, not rev related. Then 5 mins or so after that vibration starts a rubbing / grinding noise starts - sounds like its coming from front left transmission tunnel sort of area. You can feel it very clearly. Its gets louder and granchier till I pulled over as it was making a really nasty noise. I sat for a minute then took off again and it was gone - and this is exactly the same course of action I took the last time it occured with the same result. God knows what it is. If it was exhaust rub it would be reasonably obvious if you hoist the car and check for fresh wear marks.

Yeah this is the 2nd time it has happened to me.

First time was driving up Albany hill during a huge down pour on Saturday morning.

Then this morning at about 7:30am on Beaumont st.

Both times going through about an inch of surface water.

i would say you have the same thign as 99gtt in the wet it is really bad its the hanger bearing on the driveshaft or the casing around it has cracked and its allowing water in ro something like that anyways there is evidence of it knocking and u can move it up and down by hand so that might be your problem to its about 300 bucks to replace. try and launch and if it makes a bangin noise under the car then i wouls say you have the same thing

i too have experienced a vibration but mine came after reving it to red line in 1st,2nd,3rd and then slowing to about 120kph then about 10 sec later i could feel thru the car a shuddering. it sounded like a belt or something had broken and was wacking on the chasis. after stopping and checking, i drove off none the wiser. no rain but??

That sounds like the brakes? mine do that when they are hot the steering wheel shuddurs, warped rotors I'd say... I should fix it one of these days :)

nup, wasnt breaking, just letting the car slow to a speed more accepted by the local speed apreciation club. (police)

Sorry to bring up a 5 year old post!, But did any one figure this out. I have had this happen to me 3 or 4 times in heavy rain ONLY, a rubbing / grinding noise starts - sounds like its coming from front left transmission tunnel sort of area. I actually thought something was stuck under the car, which it was not.

Exact same thing! It happens in summer big down poor's.

Any answer for this?

LOL - I get exactly the same thing. Also happens on cold mornings for the first 5 or so minutes.

I thought it was the bearings; had it checked out a few times with no solution, figured I'd wait for it to get worse and after 3 years, it's no better or worse and keeps sailing through WOFs.

I thought it was only to do with my car - I can't say I care about it anymore.

Mysterious.

This may or may not be related to the above noises but I'll share it anyway.

A mistery wurring noise I have had ever since I got my 97 gt-t, turned out to be the rubber seal on the underside of the bonnet scoop that seals around the intercooler when the bonet is down. At between 50-80 kph it would make a noise similar to a wheel bearing getting old.

I discovered this after changing my spark plugs and I went for a drive before putting the grill back on top of the intercooler. With out the grill the sound was gone. So the air passing through the scoop must have been makng the rubber seal flap around in some manner when the grill was on.

I have since put the grill back on to the intercooler and sure enough the sound has returned. I can't say if the rain has any more effect upon this or not.

Like I said it might not be related to issues above but it could be worth popping off that intercooler grill for a while and see if it stops something you're hearing
