Easiest way to drain a fuel tank

Postby ATAl » Mon Aug 16, 2010 6:41 pm

Hey, I need to drain the fuel tank on my ae92 levin to replace the current petrol with petrol of another octane.

Just had a look underneath and there's no drain plug so I'm thinking syphon the fuel out.

Is there a better way?

Use the fuel pump to pump it out? That's how I did it with my MR2 - Bridged the FP and B+ (I think, can't remember) wires in the diagnostic box with the fuel supply hose to the rail sitting in my gas container and in a few mins the tank was empty.

Oxy/acetylenes quicker

But seriously, using the fuel pump is quicker, just pull the fuel return hose off and sit it in the jerry can

Damn right. A fuel pump will empty it quick smart.

Plus the screw driver way means you can't really use the tank again

Done, put the fuel line in a bottle and let the pump run, no more petrol.

hehe , at work i just remove the fuel return off the FPR, and then connect a hose from the FPR to a suitably sized jerry can... then start the car.. waaalaa. petrol powered fuel pump that automajically turns itself off when empty 8)

How long would it take for petrol to go stale? And be a bit dodge to drive with.

Depends what the petrol is and what you're trying to drive I guess. I start my Corona once a year or so on what was 91 and its sweet  Try driving a 20v on 2 year old 91 and you'd get a different result I imagine, not that i've tried it.

yeah, no probs.
You could chuck a cup of IPA (Isopropyl alcohol) in the tank too. It'll soak up any water that's in the tank.

ran my busted gen2 3s on 12 month old 95, got me from home to the workshop across town with no problems. Only the subtle sound of rattly big ends gave things away
