OH NOES!!!!! Radiator Foam

Postby blindnz » Mon Aug 30, 2010 1:21 pm

since replacing the heater core in the girlfriends ae92 levin i am getting but loads of foam out of the radiator.

Image

the car hasnt gone anywhere, is this just air bubbles? when i first filled it i didnt fill the heater core first. i've since drained it and used a piece of tube to fill the heater core. and then refilled the radiator.
But im still getting all this foam as soon as i start the car. I had it running for about 5 minutes pouring water in to wash the foam off and its still foaming.

Never had it like this before, even in my old trueno changing radiators replacing head gaskets i havent seen it like this.

Hi there blindnz. Is it possible that you grabbed the detergent instead of the coolant?

Nah its straight water at the moment, no coolant. i just wonder if the guy i bought the heater off cleaned it out at all. although i ran a hose through it when i bought it and the water ran out clean.
It does almost seem like detergent foam.

Cheers Rob.

Did a quick search on google, and this is the only thing I can really find

mine did the same thing when i put new radiator in. it was i white foam like an orange julius drink if you are familiar with those. i had to keep skimming the top with shop vac untill clear. i think it was residue in radiator eventually it cleared up

Appart from that, just HG problems, but yours doesn't look like a cracked HG.

Yeah its crazy. Wouldnt think it had a BHG (Hence the OH NOES!!) As theres no water in the oil and the water and foam is clear. Wasnt over heating or anything when it was parked up. I Just didnt want to keep it running because i was worried about the foam churning up and leaving airbubbles every where.

give the cooling system a good flush with the motor running (hose in heater hose) and clean any residue out and see if it still does it, it could have had some engine flush in it.

Just leave your motor running until the bubbles stop coming out. They can't keep coming out for ever , can they?

You mean when you fit a new radiator along with a bottle of chemiweld to a car with a leaking headgasket.
Good motors don't pop radiators.

Have you put any thought into why the heater failed?

Radiators have lifetime expectancy. There is temperature and vibration involved (and chemical factors). They can't last forever. In fact most of plastic radiators will last ~10 year or so on average. It does not mean it has blown head gasket. Normally BHG happens after radiator failed (and/or waterpump) due to obvious reasons. It does not make sense for for BHG to happen then after couple of years radiator to fail. When head gasket is blown it is like metastasis patient - you have limited time before it becomes huge problem. Pressure is only a problem when the cap is jammed.

Or when there's more gas getting into the cooling system than the vent is capable of venting and the pressure rises.

Of course it's a total no brainer to test it with a pressure gauge. That's what removes all the BS.

Put the cap on, drive around the block a couple of times, let it cool down, top it up, go for a drive and check it when its cold again. If its not overheating and not using water then it'll be right

Playing for turbos for too long and putting over 200,000Ks on a townace by driving it over the wainui hill at least once a day over a period of 12 years.
Have you read my turbo V8 build on NZV8?
