I think just about everyone would want this. Not just to stop car theft but to stop stalkers finding you and car dealers sending you spam when you buy a second hand car privately!

Quick question along these lines.. say if I wanted to find out the second to last owner of my car, and talk to them about something disputed with the last owner, is this legal? If so, what is the best way to find out their contact details?

Go into a post shop and pay for the ownership history, or pay for a similar report on Carjam. Did that for an F100 Ford my brother was looking at, then hit the white pages with name and address as well as googling them. Was a very worthwhile phone call.

http://www.carjam.co.nz/

From the carjam site.

No more FREE information.
NZ Transport Agency is stopping the provision of the free information.
No more free reports will be available from 1st January 2011 if this goes ahead.
CarJam does not support this move which will hurt the New Zealand consumer.
What can we do?
Ideally, please do both of the following:
•Email the Minister of Transport
•Sign the Petition

If the rest of the motor trade use it as much as we do it will be a pain in the arse.
There is no ownership details on there anyway unless you pay.
we use it for model and chassis numbers etc usually.

I wouldn't necessarily believe what carjam says, the quick skim of the legislation I had (admittedly not indepth) didn't show any real changes for what was available unless the owner opted out. I suspect they are pissed their whole business plan just got severely devalued by giving car owners the choice to remove their info, too many people do it and suddenly they become pointless.
