You will have to consider risks, and cost of worse repair that your vehicle will have vs 2k + excess. Remember there is a lot of stuff that those warranty do not cover (shocks/bushes/wheel bearings etc).

If you have $20,000 eurotrash, then yes go ahead. If you have $10,000 corolla perhaps not. Remember if you do your own oil changes, forget about them, you will have to do it at MTA approved place which is added cost (and most of the time will be an extra cost on top if you want genuine filter and better oil).

True but if you had a GT4 or similar and it totally shat itself then a full engine rebuild looks pretty good, or similar for a Gbox

There is no limit to the number of claims you can make during the policy period. The most we will pay in total for claims under this policy is ($20,000). The most we will pay for any single claim is:

up to 125,000 kms $8,000
up to 175,000 kms $5,000
up to 225,000 kms $3,000

Bet ya there are some people that see the 20k part but not the rest

I have a GT4, and in the long run it is cheaper to get second hand gearbox, or second hand block for it than to pay extortionate premium and excess for mechanical insurance for car like that. Remember they would not even look at some cars.

Those warranties are basically scam. There are a lot of things they don't cover and each new fault found while the car being repaired for unrelated fault carries new excess charge.

I dont think I would go as far as saying they are a scam, I know of a couple people that have had a really good experience with them.

I have to say what impressed me was the 16 year cut off. That means I could go buy that elusive v6 Type R sti or even an st205.... most other companies only go out to 10 years

Not if he gets it in next decade

I will tell you one little secret: many car dealers are making more $$$ from these warranties than from cars they sell.

I haven't read their policy, but I was with Drive Right (I think) and the servicing intervals required were 15k. So every 3 services I got a mechanic to do it. Not a big cost as I just serviced it myself in between those services. So just make sure you read up the policy!! If the 9 has common problems that are spendy to fix, then it would be a good option.

I was talking to My fiancees friend last weekend, and she had mechanical insurance on her Audi A4, best investment she ever made, it was one of the last no excess ones, cost her $1500, and its paid out close to $15,000, including 10,000 for a complete new air con system, as it shat itself, a couple of wheel bearings, and a new turbo and housing, due to the old one cracking the day after she brought the car.

I think som people strike it lucky, others it a waste of time and money. Sure if you love your air con, it might be worth it for getting it replaced, but for every day stuff, not sure the cost is worth it, as has been said, its usually easy and cheap enough to pick up a reliable second hand gbox or engine.

as sergei said to my mind it depends on the vehicle. eurotrash, surely worthwhile in most cases - particularly if the car is from singapore.

^ fark yes, mad not to in that case really.
Average Jappa car, not so critical as the parts supply (2nd hand drive train etc) are usually a lot easier and cheaper to get.
Only thing is with newer generation stuff the electrickery can be $$$$$

Only warranty i've ever liked was autosure.
No excess, unlimited claims.
My Forester gave it a good hiding, clutch, flywheel, turbo, gearbox, diff.

But my Stagea was with Protecta, never had to claim, mainly casue I didnt want to, stupid excess.

Im with Lumley, and they specifically state any Turbo 4WD vehicle requires a special policy, so may pay to check on that.

We bought our Commodore from turners a couple of months ago, it started missing and stalling after a week or so. Took it for service (to keep warranty happy) cost $190, then rang them to see about making a claim. Excess was $200 on top of the $190 service I just paid for, and it turned out to be the CAS which I got from oz for $39 and did myself.

If I were to buy the car again, after reading through the policy and seeing what they DONT cover (shocks, bushes, gaskets, seals etc), I wouldnt have got the waranty seeing as its such a common car and worst case scenario, is a new engine for ~1000 off TM.

Wear and tear happens on every car, if they covered that can you imagine the premiums? (re shocks, bushes etc) It's more to cover the big things like engine blowing up etc The money for the service went straight to the garage, not the warranty company so I can understand the excess on top.

I just see it as insurance, if you can't afford to fix a blown engine (worst case) then its worth looking into. Much like car insurance, if you can't afford to fix your car if you have a smash, then you get insurance.
