Postby rhardgrave » Sat Sep 25, 2010 10:48 am

Morning all.

just a quick one, im pretty sure im up for new shocks soon on my AE101 FXGT, i wanted to know, without going down the road of lowering my car what are the options of aftermarket shocks that you guys have used and liked/disliked

orrr is it worth my while getting a full set of adjusties installed?

any advice.

Cheers.

good set of koni adjustables (inserts) would see you right. no need for cert or anything. i presume you are wanting to keep it a street car?

depending on the spring combo you go with it shouldn't lower the car much at all and will improve the handling x100.

depending on money but adjustables will probably be too stiff (high spring rates on most adjustables), quite expensive (would want to buy new or close to new), and also have the hassle of getting it certed.

thats what i think anyway.

Why not just get a set of OEM replacement KYB inserts - If the car is only a daily you don't need anything adjustable or hardcore. Will also be significantly cheaper than buying adjustable dampers / coilovers.

If you want GOOD sports shocks, then yeah Konis ftw. Other option is bilstein, equal quality, just no damping adjustment.
If you don't want to spend $3-400 a corner then genuine Toyota ones are the the best bet imo. Just make sure they order them as per your model and frame number so you get proper FX-GT ones and not a base model Corolla ones.

A good quality set of adjustables that you will like in day to day use will be over $2k.

Check with the forum sponser on prices for the Toyota ones.
They used to be $150 each plus gst rrp, but have had increases since then and only the sponsor can say what discount you can get.

Genuine. I am now of the opinion that there is no aftermarket option in NZ that is equal to the quality of genuine.

Oh yeah! I should have said no standard replacement that is as good as genuine. Several upgrades though.

Though I would have to say that KYb Excel G struts were firmer than those shitbox TGP ones you got me for the AW. Though you probably got me the wrong ones :P

No... but if you have to ask, get someone who has done it to help you. There's a few tricks and some safety things to consider
