Garrett T25g vs Masterpower GT28

Postby l1ttle_d3vil » Sun Sep 26, 2010 10:20 pm

I know SFA about what difference the numbers on the side of a turbo actually make, other than the smaller the number the better it spools etc. Hopefully someone can give me a rough idea of what sort of difference I could expect between these two turbos.

Garret T25g
Stock as off the S13 / 180SX's, journal bearing. M24 A/R .80 cover, M3 A/R .64 exhaust.

Masterpower GT28
60 trim T3 GT Spec .42A/R compressor. 47mm inducer, not exactly sure of exhaust housing at the moment.

Basically want to know if I swapped the turbo and left everything else as is, how would it compare, or if it would be a complete waste of time for the gain. The T25g is making just over 180kw on 12psi with full boost around 4000rpm and pulls all the way through to the limiter. It is a really nice turbo to drive on but as always I could do with more power.

How much laggier would the GT28 be, if at all?
How much more power would it make at the same RPM / Boost?
How much boost would the GT28 handle reliably?

Cheers
-Matt

will it bolt straight on or will you have to change manifold flange?

99% sure it is a direct bolt on.

Edit - actually just noticed the exhaust flange is different so would require a new dump pipe flange.

This is the turbo - still waiting to hear from the guy with more specs.

Not sure if Masterpower have a "standard" size exhaust housing which they run on these turbos. From the sounds of it they have various compressor options available so probably not...

Hey, if you want more info you can ask me.
And his reserve is a crazy price!

Its bigger than a T25g.
I supplied one to a guy and it gets full boost around 3700rpm on his 16v 4agte. Made 190kw atw on relatively low boost.

Exhaust housing is .63ar, 60 trim.
Yeah it is a good price, especially if it is brand new.

Bazda - Did the 4agte you're talking about have any other major mods or was it a fairly stock setup? Would these turbos handle 18 - 20psi comfortably?

thanks

It was a stock 4agze engine.
Easily handle that boost.

I think he settled on 18psi. They ran it up to 22psi but his injectors were not big enough for it. He says its a great road car, spools up nicely etc.

195kw on 18psi I was just told. Thats in Australia and they usually get a little lower results than we do here..

I run a Garrett GT28bb which comes from a GTR skyline upgrade.(would use 2 of them).
It has a .42 comp and .64 exhaust.
I got 185katw @15psi on my 20v silvertop NOT running VVT.(old setup)
Injectors Ran out but i would go to 20psi quite happily with bigger ones.

Mine seamed to drive a bit like a 2 stroke with power band from about 3800rpm. Might have been better if i used the VVT.
It was FWD tho.

My goal is 200kw atw with my new setup.

Sweet.

I got 204kw at 18psi on what was basically a GTiR T28 turbo,
although it had a smaller rear housing and larger front wheel.
